Right guys,

Track car, I have got £1500 to play with. What should I be looking at?

Spotted a 54plate 182 with 70k for £1400? Maybe? I am open to anything and not shy when it comes to using a spanner.

172/182 make amazing track cars as they're quick enough out of the box to not feel your holding people up etc. Or an MX5 as said but they are slow in standard form.

Is the Clio 182 a Cat D or similar £1400 is too cheap for a 54 plate car with 70K miles. If there is nothing wrong with it i'd snap it up at that price as it would make a great track car.

172/182 or MX5, simples.

For Clios you need to make sure the belt services have been done (they will need to have been done twice by now).
For the MX5s you need to check for rust.

There are a lot of us on here with cheap Clio track cars (me included), and also a lot with cheap MX5 track cars, so plenty of advice.

Belts done last year, both Cup packs, steering wheel doesn't look to melted.

The exhaust has dropped so the mounts have perrished, but they aren't expensive to replace, and its missing at least one centre cap from the wheels. The black diamond on the front is a mod too, not that it really tells you much about the previous owners.

Well worth a visit, that one. If its not fubar'ed, its a steal.

To be honest I prefer the early 172s simply because they had cable throttle.
I had a phase 1 but I beleive the early phase 2 had cable throttle as well didn't it ?

I haven't driven a DBW clio but i did have a DBW S3 and the throttle response difference on the clio made it much more "hot" for want of a better word to drive, the Throttle just felt more responsive.

This thread makes me jealous, currently negotiating buying a house so any silly purchases like this are well out of the question :(

I did a trackday recently in my ep3 type r. It was quick enough to keep up with the rd-8s, minis etc but personally I wish I had a rwd car.

Id go:
mx5
Mr2
Mr2 turbo
BMW e36 328i with an LSD

Other jap stuff like 200sx, 300zx, although I don't know much about them.

Rang the Clio up, he says the engine rattles and makes a horrible noise on start up. Pulley I am guessing?

Seemed very nervous speaking to me which isn't normal for a trader? Not sure if to go look at it or not now, pulley doesn't put me off, his confidence talking about it did though...

MR2 Turbos actually aren't great on track as they're too on/off - particularly if modded. The na is much better but it's well down on grunt, you'd be as well with an mx-5 tbh. A sorted mk3 mr2 could be good fun on track too but at the money you'll be looking at a potential ticking timebomb with the engine.

E36 makes a pretty versatile track / play car when stripped out and the diff changed but they break all the bloody time (not majorly) so it depends how patient you are and how solid a car you can find.

Its not actually the diff that breaks but the diff bolt, think thats the name, its pathetically weak but bmw do a replacment for about £10 which is a lot stronger

I will stretch to £2k if I can find something special.

How much dollar does it involve to make a MX5 shift quicker?
