Track toy

Not really much of a BMW person though that's the thing, love Toyotas and Subarus really - so want something from one of their stables - and don't really fancy a Supra or MR2.

i wasnt telling you to get a BMW. i was suggesting something that would be better suited to having fun on the track, or you just doing it so you can put striped on your yellow and blue rally jacket lol

Both of your selections are heavy, complicated, 4wd cars.

The Classic Impreza STi is around the 1250kg mark - which is as light as a AWD car will get

And they are hardly complicated either - nothing compared to an Evo with more electronics than Jesus

that is pretty light tbh, if thats true. still a 4wd yawn fest

Turbo cooling / oil coolers / intercoolers / turbos going bang / sump problems, loads more problems and complications plus costs in running a turbo track car never mind a 4wd one.

Agreed, a GT4 is not a good track toy and will need quite a bit spending on it for it to even be a "working" track toy.

Much better with something like a 205mi16 or something.

The lightened Type-R and Type RA are both just sub the 1200kg mark - and even lighter with the interior removed.

i knew they were pretty good weight wise but had no idea it was that low

a 2L turbo 4x4 saloon/coupe that weighs about the same as a mk2 golf

Older RAs were 1170. Newer ones (like mine) had leccy windows and AC.

It will cost more to run an old japanese 4wd turbo car as a track toy than an even older german rwd NA car.

If you can afford it then by all means carry on. Either will be entertaining.

Definition is needed.

Do you want a 'Track Car', or a 'Car that can be taken to a Track'. The Impreza and the GT4 are the latter, not the former.

Im very keen on a track car, something raw and fun that will not get much use as a normal car and be a pure toy. Looking at things like kit cars, Elise S1's with breathing mods, etc etc. That is what id call a 'track car'.

Stripped out Rev 3 MR2 NA? They are cheap as chips, 178bhp. Spend a bit on upgrading the suspension and i reckon you'll have a fun track toy.

I'd say something more like a 205 Mi16, loved the stripped 1.6GTi I had a drive of. Was plenty of fun, who cares it being fwd if it is fun.

Alternatively you could look into something more like the MX5, all depends on your budget.

something light and RWD/FWD, will really hound them 4wd boys into and around corners :)

Just a track car for me would be something like clio 16v/172 or golf VR6. XE nova/corsa's are a hoot as above to.

How long do the gearboxes last on classic scoobs when driven hard? Both my mates have given up and run ppg's now :p

Depends which box you are using. The STi (especially Type R/RA) boxes should last pretty well provided you do not launch the car from 3000odd rpm, and provided you are not making over 300/350ish ftlb - and you can always swap in one of the newer STi boxes as the mountings are mostly the same.

Scoob, like any turbo 4wd car will eat your wallet as a track car.

Old XR2 Turbo I used to run cost bugger all, maybe take on board what some of the guys are saying here :)

Both my friends scoobs cost a good amount to run, the V4 Type R my friend has must have front discs made of gold judging by the price (and more electronics than my evo ;) )

here are the rough costs of the one a friend of mine has built
car £500
engine £300
all the fiddly bits to do the conversion £400-£500
then the usual money sorting out suspension, brakes, wheels, tyres

with an m50 manifold etc his is c.230bhp, he is going to megasquirt it too

ive seen it demolish a 240bhp PPP mk1 impreza. imprezas are a bit of a one (or two) trick pony imo. the BM is an absolute hoot to drive, imprezas (with normal power levels) arnt

edit: his owed him under £2k until he decided to go for mega squirt
What engine does he have in it?
I'm guessing it's a 2.7/2.8 as the 2.5 doesn't like to go much above 200bhp without serious work IIRC.

If I were going to build a track toy it would have to be cheap to buy, cheap to prep and cheap to run.

An E30 325i would be top of the list. Both cars mentioned above are 4WD and turbo. Both will cost £££ to mod properly and £££ when they break. An old RWD BMW will give you plenty to keep you occupied.

someone talking some sense, although i find i could jsut do with a small turbo to help mine out a bit
