It's that time of the year where these things seem to get dragged out. However, I always return to them after playing more 'modern' games. I should quality that by traditional games I mean those that have been around for hundreds of years, I don't mean any game invented by a company, so nothing like Monopoly or any TV spinoff game.

I have a particular interest in backgammon and have done for a long as I can remember. My fiance is Turkish and backgammon is very popular over there, so it's just as well since her dad's a big player [and better than me (currently {Angus Higgins mode})].

Never been one for Chess, particularly. Draughts, occasionally. I've always just started playing Reversi/Othello, which is great because a game can literally turn round at any moment. I would love to be better at Go but it's bloody hard unless you have a finesse for strategy. What are people here fanatics of?

We still occasionally play backgammon on rather a nice folding board we have. I can’t remember the last time I played chess or draughts on a board. I suppose that you could count Scrabble as a traditional game now and that gets played regularly.

Backgammon is fantastic. I never had anyone to teach me when I was younger so I got a book out of the library on it. When I was doing my A levels I discovered that two friends were also a bit partial to the game so one of us always carried a travel-sized board for use in the common room.

My parents bought me a really nice chess set a few years ago, My wife isn't a fan though so it's just put up in the loft in my parents house, It's a shame really, I enjoy a game of chess

Frustration, we love that as a family game.

I do enjoy chess but have no-one here to play it with, so have to resort to internet based games. Also a big fan of Othello.

Thought about getting some board games recently, we have monopoly but quite fancy getting more myself.

Used to play Rummikub which was good.

I know it's not a board game but Uno is a great Christmas card game and so is Pit (can get very competitive)

I don't 'get' backgammon. I've read up about it, and played it and it just seems incredibly simple. I'm not sure where the strategy or joy comes into it.

I really enjoy chess, but not many people do so never get to play it. Don't like playing it online either.
Risk is awesome, but again no one to play with.
Monopoly is fantastic. Me and my girlfriend play it a lot.

I've played it with strategic players who use tactics and concepts which mean I have to seriously up my game. It all depends on who you're playing with.

6 of us got heavily involved with a game of Risk last year whilst in a remote cottage in Lake District. Ipads / phones barely got a look in as there's something far moer engaging with a game that has something tactile to it.

A guy got caught cheating at the World Domino Championship and the other competitors rammed a whole set of Dominoes up his arse, in agony he rushed to his Doctors and burst in begging the Doctor to sort him out, the Doctor looked at him and said 'Don't you ever knock?'

Words with Friends has made me fancy some Scrabular action this Christmas. Monopoly too, although playing any kind of board game with a wee nipper cannonballing about the place is a Herculean task.

Oh my goodness, that is terrible. That GP should be struck off and I hope the victim's fellow players were given harsh sentences. The whole game is becoming a breeding ground for violence these days.

Settlers of Catan.

I have this on my ipad but haven't got a clue on what's happening...

for me Monopoly is a classic boardgame.

I've been taught backgammon twice but then instantly forget the rules.

Teaching my 7 year old chess at the moment great fun letting him win yet dropping helpful hints when he makes a crazy move hehe.
