Train prices

Train prices in the Uk are something else and on top of that rubbish service.

I swear after returning from places like France, Belgium & Denmark the UK public transport system is stone-age and inefficient. Denmark....wow...now *thats* how you run trains. The ride from the airport...so nice!

The amount of reduced price advance tickets per train is hugely diminished from what it was 5 years back. Sometimes you can run the same route on the same train, but buying a number of singles and it costs far less. Eg. I have run Newcastle to York, York to Peterborough, Peterborough to Harlow Town on returns without leaving the train, for about 60% of getting a ticket from Newcastle to Harlow Town. The railways are based on what they think the consumer will pay, far far more than they are based on journey distance.

And how often do you, at 21:24, decide you suddenly need to leave for Edinburgh tommorrow morning? Virtually all long distance journeys are known about in advance - and the few that don't pay a premium.

The problem is, 'in advance' is becoming longer and longer before the intended journey, whilst the time you can book ahead has decreased hugely, under guise of engineering work.

Sometimes I'll get the train from Leeds to London for work; if I turn up on the day and get an open return, that's £235 please

But if book far enough in advance and commit to travel at certain times then it's a lot cheaper, but usually I have to leave @ 6am ish so it's never that cheap.

On the flipside I got a first class single to Newcastle from Leeds to pick up my car for about £10 - result :)

Like others have said, only thing I've found to make the fares reasonable is young person's railcard. Hopefully I will be driving by the time I am too old and won't have to use the, frankly, crap train service in this country.

Sorry my time for a rant.

The commuter train at 6.30am into London has been shortened by a carriage to 4 carriages now. It comes from sheffield area and mine is the last stop, plus with 1.5 1st class, and a buffet car, that leaves 1.5 carriages for standard.

Now it's standing room only in a fully crush loaded train. Time to complain and write a letter :p but doubt that will do anything at all !!!!!

So i shelled out £166 on a monthly ticket between doncaster and leeds. Of the 3 trains i have got to work so far all 3 have arrived late.

This morning i was 15 minutes late as the train pulled into leeds at 09.02 instead of 08.46. (which I got a telling off for on my 3rd day at work)

Great service! NOT

Don't worry, that probably isn't technically "late" for the purposes of the train company's statistics. Tell you're boss that you were actually on time!
