Following on (well not really) from the bus prices thread moaning about the cost we have the train prices...

I've just gone to book a train ticket and seen the prices. Singles from my town to Plymouth are £60+, and a return is now £62.70. Last month it was £52, so a nice jump of £10 and 20% in a month!

I know they rise but usually a couple of pounds a year, but I assume as mentioned the train companies have somehow got to make back the money they are "loosing" from reducing the restricted tarrif tickets.:mad:
 
I thought there was an almost national jump in the past month, there was one network where the prices have gone down, but I think the majority were due pretty heavy hikes
 
The whole public transport pricing in this country is a joke. I pay £3200 pa for my ticket to Liverpool St.

Buses are just as bad.. I got 2 return tickets to town the other day (2miles). My wife and I wanted to take my 2 year old on a bus.. £6.80 for the pait of us.. Parking for 4 hours is less than £4.00 for the day so no wonder people take the cars. joke Joke Joke.

I think there are "restricted" (they are called something else) tickets that are linked to inflation, these are the London tickets afaik.

I didn't really have much of a problem with train prices before, as long as ou booked a few days in advance you could get across the country for £15-20 (my regular train journey is 4.5 hours from north of london to Plymouth) and two singles could be had for £35 or an open return for £50. £75 for a single (the next cheapest was £35 arriving at midnight, most were £75 or over) for next week is taking the **** however, as is the 20% rise in return tickets!

This is with a young persons rail card as well.

I was planning on seeing my GF next week, unfortunately I can't afford the prices so it looks like a no go...:(:mad:

Yeah I used to be able to travel from just north of London to Plym for that much as well, now it seems to have gone up massively. However after checking another site (I was looking at thetrainline) it seems to be a lot cheaper on that site, but still not as cheap as it was last month. The cheap price seems to be £35 instead of £25ish and most seem to still be £60+

You are a lucky man, I pay £4300, but that is from North Bedfordshire to Boundary zone 6 + ZOne 1-6 underground :p

Trains arn't that bad, although I will start complaining when I can't get a young persons railcard anymore and will need to rely on advance tickets.
 
Train prices are generally absolutely ridiculous.
Every now and then i have had to get a train (single ticket) from preston to wigan which is one stop and takes a few minutes, this costs £6!!! that was a few months ago so it could be more now.
But yet if i travel from rufford to preston in the evening (about a 20 min journey with a few stops) costs £2.35 return!

train prices make me angry :mad:
 
I think train prices are fine, although I'm only an occasional user.

On wednesday I paid £7.10 for a return from Gerrards Cross to Wembley Stadium, which I thought was good value.
 
Would cost me £54 to get from Portsmouth to Birmingham, if I go via Euston it's £15 and takes a little less time.
 
I concur, have been looking at tickets for journeys to Glasgow but it's around £60 return, checked caches too they're around £45 =/ I remember when a similar journey was only about £25!
