That misses the root cause of the issue, which is people being downright ignorant. I'd rather more people spoke up, tapped them on the shoulder and made them realise how much of a nuisance they're being rather than allowing people to believe that it's acceptable behaviour. ;)
 
I've owned a pair of Beats Solo HD's. When used with a 3rd gen iPod touch, if I put the volume past 35% then others could hear what I was listening to =|

Edit: It wasn't me on the train :p

This sort of thing seems to be more common now, and this guy wasn't even a chav, he was an office worker. I do notice that these people are being pulled up on it more often now by those who used to grin and bear it which is heartening.

So the question is, how long before we have an army of vigilante commuters armed with scissors? :p

Seriously though, what's the best way to deal with these selfish idiots? Has anyone come up with a novel solution (burning headphone cables with lasers, defenestrating the offender etc?) :D

The solution is simple, you beat them at their own game.

Grado do some excellent open air headphones that leak out sound better than a laxative-fused bowel movement! Then, when they look at you, just look up deep into their eyes and say "...Problem? xD".
 
I thought we were onto something when those little noise isolating earphones became mainstream. Sadly, it's the standard ipod earphones that seem to be the worst offenders wherever I go. They just seem to pump more noise out of the ear than they do into it.
 
Hrm, idly thinking that perhaps a low-power, battery operated AM or SSB transmitter could be the solution while sitting next to them - headphone cable might pick up nicely and the interference should pee them off. May have to do some experiments. ;)

You might be messing with the train systems though? Nice idea though, a bit of electronic warfare on the train aha.

:D And when on the table you could also improvise with a bit of this. Job done! you'll probably be arrested but worth it.

 
Sit next to him and head bop, if he looks at you, do that lip-tut thing chavs do.
