I'm trying to boom tickets from Birmingham to Devon for next month for me and my girlfriend, preferably around Middle of February but even later would be okay depending on the price.

The cheapest I can find direct with a stop in Plymouth is £300 and if I choose to go to London probably around £200.

Is there anything else I can look around ? I mean, it's only like a 4 hour train ride, I don't understand how it can be so expensive. There are flights to Europe much cheaper then that

I don't understand train tickets either. London -> Oxford is extortionate last time I checked but London -> Liverpool was way cheaper =/

Eh? Where abouts in Devon?

I just checked and you can get a single from Birmingham to Bournemouth for £15 each way.

I was looking last night for trains from Oxford to Birmingham at the end of February. Was also £15 each way, nearly vommited. That's in advance too, for a one hour journey! I expected £10 max. I really loathe trains.

Wow thanks guys, I am definitely doing it wrong.

I just searched Birmingham ALL to Devonport on Virgin trains and the cheapest I could find for those dates was £219 bir-dev and £79 dev - bir for 2 people. I'll have another look later.

What happens if you just go through the national rail website?

Did someone delete his other thread? I worked out the cheapest way to split ticket this journey for him and posted it in his other thread and now its been deleted, can a mod move my reply from the deleted thread? I don't want to have to work it out again :p

IIRC it was Birmingham to Cheltenham Spa £22 offpeak return
Cheltenham Spa to Tiverton Parkway £42 offpeak return
Tiverton Parkway to Plymouth/Plymouth to Tiverton parkway singles £6.something each so £13

total cost £77ish each. All Cross Country trains from BIrmingham to Devon call at both Cheltenham Spa and Tiverton Parkway so no need to get off

It doesnt matter what website you use as its all connected to the same fare structure anyway, but FWIW Virgin Trains dont serve Devon.

The cheapest train tickets go on sale 12 weeks in advance, best to plan ahead if you can. And most of the sites like thetrainline, mytrainticket etc use the same search engine so there's no difference in the price IIRC

Yeah thanks, I found them at moderate price now, like Fox said, it worked out about £75 each. Which isn't too bad I suppose.

Now if anyone else here is from the Devon/Plymouth region, I need to get to Totnes, should I get ticket to Exeter and then find a train to totnes?

Or just get two singles at £17 each way?:p

Totalling £34 each return (Birmingham-Plymouth). OP it will depend on when you travel, do you want to get there early or travel on the weekend? Why Devonport particularly, as the station there is rarely stopped at, may as well just get a bus from plym station.

Splitting your ticket(s) at Exeter St David's might save you some money (it has for me in the past).

Also, purely as a matter of comfort you could consider the 08:12, 09:12, 11:12 or 13:12 Plymouth bound XC servies if you're travelling from New Street (providing the timing and price is okay!). Those services are generally run by 7-8 carriage 125s and vastly more comfortable than the over-crowded, motorised, biscuit tin 'Voyager' things which are otherwise used. It's sad I should know such things, but as a regular traveller on the route I find it really makes a difference being in a quiet, spacious train over what is a reasonably long trip...

Totnes from Plymouth or Birmingham?

All trains from the rest of England stop at totnes.

They are advance tickets. They were not showing for me on the test dates I picked and as they presumably didn't show for him either I assumed he wasn't travelling at the right time for a good advance ticket so worked out the best walk on fare for him.
