£5 there and back over several months?

Assuming you work 5 days a week, that is £50 a week gone and over £200 a month.

I would rather stand than lose that sort of money. Go to the end of the platform and it might be easier to find a seat when the train arrives. Try and get on quickly and walk through the train looking for a seat.

Also buy a railcard if you don't have one already, will save you £££.

My question is whether you would travel 1st Class for an extra £5 there and £5 back each day.

Yes.

Can't remember the last time I travelled cattle class when there was a 1st class carriage available.

Indeed it does, for 2 hours a day i'd want to be in 1st.

Which is why it depends entirely which train it is. On many, First is excellent and well worth it. On other units (Class 165/6 comes to mind..) it's basically just a standard class seat with a frilly headest and a little bit more room and therefore not worth the bother.

I know what your saying but on a busy route 1st class can guarantee a seat and after a hard days work I'm willing to pay the extra to sit down. I'd go 1st class regardless of train if it's a busy route.

I just travelled first class from Glasgow to York and back again. Was very enjoyable! Lots of leg room, a table to put your stuff on and free food and drinks.

I travelled on the East Coast train service.

Not worth it on those units imho.

I think the point is more "Should I pay the extra £5 for a guaranteed seat" than "Should I pay the extra £5 for what is supposedly first class".

Rubbish trains on that route, only do it if you can book in advance to make a better saving on a tenner a day extra.

That and learn to read a book standing up

First Class in an East Coast Trains Mk4 Coach on a flagship London to Glasgow service is absolutely nothing at all like the token gesture that is 1st Class in the back of a South West Trains high density commuter train.
