Training Day

I didn't think anyone thought it was particularly good.

Maybe an alright cop movie but definitely not oscar worthy, should I take it out or is it better that it's controversial?

Ok I'll post the ones I've got as I have 11 or 12 and I only want 10 so maybe I can switch them round.

Definites:

Denzel in Training Day over Will Smith in Ali
Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton over Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan (best picture)
No Country for Old Men over There Will Be Blood (best adapted screenplay, not because it's a bad film but it aside from about 7 lines it is literally changing formats and that's it, even the Coen brothers said so)

Maybes:

Steven Soderbergh for Traffic over Ridley Scott for Gladiator
Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction (both picture and direction)
Tommy Lee Jones for the fugitive over Ralph Fiennes for Schindlers List
Kevin Spacey for Usual Suspects over Brad Pitt for 12 Monkeys
Jim Broadbent for Iris over Ben Kingsley for Sexy Beast

that's what I have so far but a few are maybes not because they weren't any good but because I reckon someone else should have won, what do people reckon?

As good as I thought Denzel in Training Day was, Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind was simply mesmerising and for me it was by the best of the films nominated that year.

I thought it was said at the time that those two Oscar's were 'politically, or emotionally' motivated. Then again seeing as it's an American award ceremony, I didn't see the problem. Or cared.

As for the film, well it's good enough way to spend a couple of hours. Certainly not one for the ages, but watchable.

do you mean its nowhere near as good as Ali?

Cos that's my feeling exactly

Yeah, I probably should have been more clear, Ali is a genuinely moving, emotional, powerful and inspirational film, Training Day is about amusing kids by showing guns, drugs, violence and street talk.

I see your point OP about Denzel and winning an Oscar for it.

I did however like the film and thought that his acting was pretty good (as usual). Haven't watched all of Ali but I think WS could do that justice as he has some character traits that MA has which would be easy transfer in his portrayal of him, possibly.

Opinions are opinions and if you didn't like it, then fair enough.

However, it's much more than just a by-the-numbers take on the LA Crime scene. Even if you forget the subject matter of the film, it was shot and produced brilliantly, and carries a dark and moody feeling throughout which is one of its many excellent attributes.

I've seen it three or four times and I'd happily watch it again, which is not something I say about many films.

To be fair I did like it, back when it came out and I was a teenager, but I tried to watch it again recently and I just couldn't take it seriously or get into it at all. Denzel saves it by his usual good performance but everything else around him was just shades of grey. It's not the worst crime/cop film though by any means.

Thought it was totally overrated.

But then my brother had massively "rated" it to me before I watched it, so my expectations may have been unduly inflated.

i think he played the part well.

actors are personal choices though.

There Will Be Blood daniel like in all his films was epic
ben kingsley was sexy beast
spacey just had a epic role with a limp :D the film is great though.

Training Day was/is a great movie (watch it for the xth time last night).

Sad to see D's character die in the end though.

There was a campaign against A Beautiful Mind where members of the academy were sent info about John Nash being anti-semetic and detailing some of the unsavoury aspects of his life that were not covered in the movie. I pesonally think Crowe was outstanding in the role

Yeah Personally I thought Russell Crowe should have won for A Beautiful Mind - one of my favourite ever films. Will Smith was great in Ali but I found it to be a bit boring.

I seem to remember at the time thinking that Denzil Washington probably didn't deserve the Oscar for Training Day - not because it's a bad film, it isn't by any stretch but he's been better in many other films and not got recognition for them. If you can say someone deserves an Oscar for a body of work then sure, he deserves it but I think it was for the wrong film - quick look through his back catalogue, for my money he was better in Courage Under Fire, Remember The Titans, Man On Fire and American Gangster although admittedly two of them were after the win.

Considering the nominations, I think Denzel deserved it -- by a smidge. Training Day is a great film, too.

I'll bet when the winner was announced, Will Smith felt like his **** HAD BEEN PPPPPPPPUUUUUUSSHHHHHEEED INNNNNNNNN!!!!
