Training to aid playing Basketball

I've recently started training for the new Basketball season. I'd like to increase my speed and stamina plus increase my overall strength, especially my legs.

So far I've taken up running twice a week. Just a quick 2.5km run for now as it's all I can manage. I'll also be training once a week and playing once a week.

I'd like to get into the gym so may do some switch a run for some weights and a spot of light cardio.

Any help would be great, including diet :)
