I am taking part in the British london 10k run on July 2nd with so far zero training and having done no exercise for about a year (apart from a sub 10 minute jog last night!). Is it possible to get fit enought to run the whole 10k without stopping? I am not a natural jogger in fact I hate it, but set it as a little challenge and forgot about it until now!

So I have 5 weeks left, I can run approx 5/6 mins without stopping at the moment, can anyone help me out with some tips on how to get fit as quickly as possible? I will jog every day if necessary, but realistically will be going out on fri/sat nights..

Jog every other day rather than every day. Your rest periods are as important as the exercise.

I would try setting yourself a run target and hitting it, a small one at first. Then change your route to a longer one and run that.

Carry on like that and 10k will be easy :)

10K should be fine in 5 weeks if you take it reasonably seriously and are willing to hurt a little. Set goals that are tough but achievable. Go out every other day and you'll be surprised how quickly you improve and on the day with a bit of adrenaline and loads of people around you you'll fly round

Thanks for the advice, I was getting worried about running out of time. So I wont run everyday like I was going to now.

i did pretty much the same thing as you last year. As the others have said set targets and run every other day. You need to be able to jog happily for at least 30mins. Its a great feeling on the day, and the adrelanin will really help.

Dont forget to do some "oggy oggy oggy" chants when you run through the tunnels! :p

5 weeks should be fine. My biggest piece of advice would be to take a music player or something with you (of course its not good if you plan to run on roads with traffic..etc), but i find it really takes your mind of what you are doing and helps you run for longer before feeling tired.
