Hey there, well the trans siberian railway is something that I have always wanted to do, I was just wondering if anyone has ever done it and can share their thoughts?

It seems like something that would require a lot of forward planning!

Two of my mates traveled on it as part of a larger trip a couple of years ago.

OT: Their plan was to go as far as they could without using air travel, so they left London by National Express coach to Moscow and got on the Trans Siberian there. They then picked up the Trans Mongolian and traveled down China to SE Asia.

They hung around there for a while and then went to Nepal, Tibet & Bhutan, down though Bangladesh, around the coast of India and up to Pakistan.

Then sailed to Egypt and traveled down Africa by truck getting married in South Africa and then flying home. It took them 11 months all in but looks and sounds like a fantastic trip.

BOT: Although it was the beginning of the trip they though the Trans Siberian was cool, but they did have trouble finding accommodation along the way and there was quite a bit of time when they were bored just watching the Steppes go past.

Language was an issue, one night struggling for accommodation they managed to negotiate a room in a hotel, only to find out it was actually a hospital when patients started turning.

If you are going to use the train to explore as you go then do a lot of research first (I think there is a Lonely Planet / Rough Guide for the Trans Siberian which my mates had and still had difficulty) as it's not exactly a tourist Mecca.

I'd love to do it, but it's not particularly high on my list of exciting places to go. My mates said it was nice but not a patch on other parts of the journey (although a million times better than traveling though the bum end of China where they got drugged and robbed on the train and traveled on buses with urine and feces floating in the aisles).

If you do go then it will certainly be a very unique experience, I can assure you of that.

I looked into it very briefly a few years back, I was strongly recommended to travel as a group of 4 - as you can then have a cabin to yourselves.

I imagine a lot of the journey is fairly bleek tbh :)

Wow, that sounds exciting Asprilla.

I would assume finding accomodation in the various cities is fairly hard, considering the major language barrier, i guess i will definately have to look at the lonely planet guide!

It will be a year ago in September that they came back.

I think, all in, it cost them about £10,000 to £15,000 but that included getting married
