Hi,
Is anyone here familiar with the transfer of domains?
We've tried to transfer a domain here, which we own, from one provider, to 123reg, but the process failed.
Do we need to do something at the 'from' provider?

And if so, what?
As their tech support isnt being all that helpful. :(

Thanks in advance :)

+1 .co.uk being a walk in the park.

TLDs can be utter dogs dinner.

If it's a TLD (eg .com) did you unlock the domain and pass on the auth code for it?

You probably need to "unlock" it, then from reg123 you need to request the transfer, you will then get a request through which you approve and then it should be ok.

All going well :)

I've just transferred a .com from one registrar to 123reg.

Basically the process was the following:

On Existing Registrar
* Change Provider (Generates the Auth code)
* Unlock Domain (Check the Auth Code)

With 123-reg

Order domain as a Transfer.

An email will be sent out ~12-24 hours later with a link which you have to use, and to enter the Auth Code above. The link will expire in ~5 days. This is sent to the Domain Admin Contact.

Once you've entered the auth code 123-reg will being the transfer.

Edit: the following guide maybe useful http://www.123-reg.co.uk/domain-names/domain-name-transfer.shtml

Who is the original registrar?

I have transferred many .com domains between registrars and agree some are very bad at making this process easy, as it should be.

I normally recommend registering domains through registrars such as godaddy.com or name.com where the transfer process is quick and reliable and then just pointing the dns nameservers to your hosting of choice. This way the domain is not hostage to the hosting company. You can easily change your hosting provider using the nameservers in less than 24 hours without transferring the domain.
It seems that webhostingpad do not reply to requests for transfers fron the receiving registrar however the domain should be transferred within seven days in this case where there is no response (reference godaddy).
Check the whois details for your domain, http://whois.domaintools.com/ are they all in your name. The technical contact may be in the name of webhostingpad or their representative. Another reason to use a registrar where you can alter all these details manually yourself.
