I take it Airdroid just uses the internet etc to transfer files. It's not actually connecting direct to PC like in a LAN/HUB setup, like email in other words, sends file to some server then you download file on PC or visa versa?

Is there any way to transfer files from phone/tablet to PC wirelessly without setting up LAN/switch environ, I think the wireless adapter on PC can be set to an access point for example?

I configure ES File Explorer to access my PCs via WiFi, pretty straightforward.

I would switch to another file manager. ES was bought by a Chinese company some years back and has bloatware (possibly malware?). Same company that bought and ruined Quickpic (though there is an old signed version of Quickpic available).

Solid Explorer is good.

I'm using version 3.2.5.5 of ES File Explorer which was a couple of versions before they added the bloatware. I've also digitally (re)signed it to make sure it doesn't automatically update again ever. I tried Solid Explorer after ES screwed their File Explorer and didn't find it as good.

Edit: Just had a look at Solid Explorer again. It's vastly improved since the last time I looked at it in 2015.

Tried almost all wireless file transfer apps on the playstore. This one tops everything. Devices dont have to be connected to the same wifi

Edit: Devices dont need an active internet connection. Works on PC, Andoird, iOS and MAC.

My 2nd choice would be Airdroid

Sync me is my fav

I use one which I've set up to mirror a set of phone folders with my pc (server in this case)

Every night on connection to WiFi (ie when I get home from work) the folder pairs sync up. For me this adds all photos I've taken from phone to folder

Clever bit for my purposes is that any files I delete are also passed. Both ways. If I don't like a picture I can delete it on PC side and deletion is mirrored
