Hi, got the 250GB Seagate that was on offer of the week last and whenever I transfer stuff to it, pictures are messed up. Like there are missing bits of the photo and the colours are messed for a few.

I have run CHKDSK, it found a few errors the first time, and fixed them. But stil the same problem.

Can someone please advise.

sounds like windows screwed up copying the data, I had that when backing up my music collection
you're best off useing a data backup prog that can check the files against the originals before finishing.

windows has a basic one built in (check system tools).
other than that no as I use veritas and its quite expencive last time I checked.

its called Veritas Backup Exec and its about £300 or so.

I THINK (not sure) that nero has a backup feature now aswell.

you're best off asking in windows software forum.

Have a look at Syncback SE from here

I use the paid-for version which is a bargain at US$25, and lets you do multiple scheduled backups and backup to FTP servers etc, however they also have a freeware version here which does the basics and may suit your needs.

Ok I got this using windows backup

You should almost never have data corruption, however you choose to copy it. If you do, it's very stronly an indicator of hardware issues, anything from dodgy drive, to cable trouble, to RAM issues, to overlocking/overheating issues. Is your system overclocked at all? Have you any other pc to test the 250Gb in? Have you got any other drive that you can copy onto to test? (If your pc copies fine onto another disk, then it's the new drive. Equally, if the new drive works fine in another PC then it's not the drive but your PC.)

maybe use somthing like UBCD to check your hard disks health, or maybe just speedfan (although UBCD has better tools).
if its showing some things about "fails" then that could be a sign that its giving up the ghost, but as the last guy said it could also be down to ram/overclock etc.

It isnt overclocked. I'll try UBCD first (downloading now). If it fails, then I'll try the hard drive in another computer. Thing is I tried Seagate tools and it showed both drives as failures with errors on a full scan! I'm pretty sure there was nothing wrong with my existing drive. So maybe it is RAM? Do you think it could have anything to do with me man-handling the motherboard when I was installing a new fan.

Also the SATA cables feel very loose and they have small kinks in them. So it could possibly be the cables (i hope)?

*Both* drives showed errors?

It could be RAM, though I'd have thought that you'd have seen other problems as well in that case (crashes, blue screens, etc.) You say the sata cables feel loose and they have kinks in them? Hmmm... Well, it's cheap enough to get another set to test, and I don't like the sound of those bent and loose cables. Make sure you don't run them close to the PSU/anything that might affect them signal wise. What exactly do you mean by "man handle the motherboard"? You should not have br0ken anything (depending on what you did) but anything's possible... :) The only way to get to the bottom of things is by a process of elimination. My guess would presently be on the cables or the mobo. I somewhat doubt it's your hdd's and slightly doubt it's the RAM (purely since I think this would've likely caused you other symptoms... it could still turn out to be the RAM.) You can perhaps download MemTest86 to test your RAM in isolation.

Ok, thanks for your reply.

Ive got a working drive and put it in with the Seagate. I tried copying stuff back and forth and got errors.

Then to test if its the cables, I used the cable from the working drive on the Seagate and tried copying stuff from partition to partition. Came back with no errors. But I don't know if that really matters? Because data isnt flowing down the cable? Data is on the same drive.
Then I tried with the "dodgy" cable and no errors aswell. But again dont know if its worth anything because data is going down the cable.

I'm totally lost as to what I should do next
