Transferring registered keeper

Hello folks.
I need to transfer the registered keeper of my wifes car to myself.
Now I understand that registered keeper and owner are two different things.
And I don't necessarily need to change the ownership, just the registered keeper.

So my questions!

1. Do I simply fill out the section 6 and 8 of the V5C and send to the DVLA?
2. Is it possible to do this online?
3. Am I right in understanding that even though I am transferring registered keeper, I need to still cancel the remaining road tax on my wife and make a new road tax application in my name?
4. Just out of interest how does one find out the "ownership" of a car (not registered keeper)?
5. When do I inform the insurance company of the transfer in ownership? (i.e. as soon as I send off the V5C? or when I receive the new V5C?)

Sorry for many questions, little confused about the whole thing!

Thanks OCUK :)

Cheers Woody!
Just of out interest, why would I want to SORN it? Im just simply transferring it and as you said if keeper is transferred then my wife will get the refund and I can proceed to tax the car immediately?
(Is SORNing done automatically or something?)

E: I guess I can go to the post office tomorrow and tax it immediately, even before doing the keeper change online by a few days? Or wont it let me?

Thanks Woody, that's clear.

I guess to road tax it, I cant do it online, must be in the post office with the green slip (section 10) ?

Whilst owners and registered keepers are technically different, most people will consider them to be the same, so trying to explain to future buyers that even though the V5 says 3 former keepers it only really has 2 may put people off as it may seem dodgy. Without knowing the circumstances it's difficult to comment but if you can avoid doing it, I'd suggest avoiding it :p

Not sure why would do this? All our cars are registered to me, but my car is insured by me, and hers insured in her name. Simply tell insurance its registered to you, but she is main driver. Only reason I can think why you would do this?

Unless you specifically want to add another previous owner to potentially decrease the cars value?

If it’s for insurance purposes it doesn’t matter if the registered keeper is your spouse. It shouldn’t change the premium.

My wife’s car is registered to me, she drives it and insured it in her name. With me being the registered keeper it doesn’t effect the insurance premium.

There are only a few circumstances you would need to change it (like a divorce). If you do need to do it, the end of the month is best to avoid overlapping the tax.

Its due to work reasons, I have to drive a car which is less than 5 years old which my current car is not and my wifes car is.
And they need the registered keeper to be me.
Thats the background.
Thanks to everyone for your response.
