Transporting high value items in my own car - insured?

Just one of those "sudden thoughts" moments.
I'm having a quite expensive new TV delivered to my mums address today (as nobody would be at home). I'll be collecting it later and transporting it home in my car.
Obviously if I drop it getting into the car or at the other end that is my own stupid fault.
With the weather as bad as it currently is, lets say I was involved in an accident (either solo affair or with somebody else) - would the TV be insured?
I'm guessing not - just wondering if car insurance usually covers belongings as well?

Cheers.

I would check the wording of your policy.

You may find many comprehensive policies do cover personal belongings, but only upto a certain amount.

An expensive TV might go above that value.

As far as I know, car insurance only covers the vehicle. For things like TV's you need home insurance.

OK, cheers all. I guessed that would be the case, I will quickly go and check my policy wording to be sure.
Not that I've got any intention of having an incident - well into my 25th year on the road and I've only had the one scrape, but you never know.

Your car insurance will likely have cover for items transported up to a certain value. You will need to check your policy to determine whether it is enough for the value of the TV.

Your home policy may also cover it depending again on the wording of it.

However you will usually be asked to provide evidence of the value. The problem you will have is that the TV is not yours. It's your mums. So your home policy will almost certainly not cover it and I have no idea how the car insurance company will react.

Eh? It is his, he's just having it delivered to a different address so there is someone to sign for it...

As above, home insurance is probably more likely to cover it, but best to check with both to be safe

Ah you're right. I misread the post as it being his mums TV and he was driving it round there.

I think the best course of action here is to simply avoid having an accident - removes all possibility of things going wrong.
When I do a TV purchase (every 5-6 years for our main set) it tends to be a good one, so with this being £1400 worth thought I'd make sure all events were covered - I've already made sure accidental damage is there in case my fist wall mounting experience goes wrong.
Found the following in my policy booklet:

Possessions temporarily removed:
Up to the sum You insured Your Contents for per claim. You are covered for up to 30 days provided that they are stored in an occupied private property; in the building where You work; at a building for valuation, cleaning or repair; in a professional storage facility or while being moved between Your Home and one of the above.

So that sounds like it should be covered.

Not sure how it would go if you phoned up to ask if you were insured to transport it and then the very same day happened to crash and make a claim whilst quoting that you'd phoned up to check it was insured.

Bit like if you take out life insurance and then were to die very soon after.

You don't need to give them any details about yourself. Details will be on the website or the docs they send you
