I create a fair few threads regarding traveling, and thought it would be good to start one for general discussion as a few on this forum regularly travel or have traveled.

I will start with a link that a friend sent me. I will most certainly be booking a tour in December/January!

http://www.atlanticclipper.com.au/ - WRONG LINK

http://www.taophilippines.com/ - Correct link which I meant, left the above as it is pretty nice as well.

Whilst not a sailing person, that is to say I've never been, that looks pretty good, not amazingly expensive and a great opportunity to see some fantastic islands other underwater sights.
I'll confess I'm more inclined toward overland travel and hadn't ever thought of a boat trip like that. Looks good though :)

Mine and my partners next trip will be to Italy, to Puglia near the heel of Italy in September, after that in May next year it will be Japan. We're booking through Inside Japan, very knowledgeable and very helpful:

How silly... I pasted the wrong link haha, have too many favorites in the boat trips folder now :P

This is what I meant: http://www.taophilippines.com/

Much more down my alley. The first link does also look good, however, looks slightly more focused on cruising and chilling.

Bloody long way to go for a 2 day trip.

Haha, wrong link as said above... Will correct it. And anyway, I'm off at the end of October for a while traveling around Asia then settle down in Oz for a while in January/February.

Just trying to find fun stuff to book ahead of time to keep me on the move. Otherwise I will become complacent and lazy! Like I did in Goa, India... That place is heaven for relaxing haha.

:D

I've done an 11 day liveaboard out of Cairns and that was too short!!

A friend suggested Cairns... Said it's defiantly a place to go for backpacking.

said to head North to the national park and get to the beach and stay in a hostel. Mentioned someone about the oldest rain forest...

Know anything about the area?

Is it travelling if you go for work or holiday and take a suitcase? Or is this strictly the self discovery, backpack and hallucinogens type travelling?

All inclusive does not count, that's a holiday to a holiday destination.

This is traveling for those that want to move around with a backpack haha.

And I sense you don't like the idea of traveling.

The age old question of what is travelling and what is a holiday! Personally I think it's a mindset, sit in an all inclusive, no, boring! Hire a car in a random country for a few days, changing locations every night, yes. It's about the journey, not the destination (well to use the old phrase). You don't have to have a backpack, although that would make things easier.

As for the sailing link there is another Atlantic clipper style company that do week+ trips out of the canary islands. Pretty cheap and you are the crew. You don't get much rest/relaxation but the experience would be awesome.

Oh and to put the cat amongst the pigeons... I wouldn't class doing the gap yeah circuit as travelling... ;) hostel full of westerners to hostel full of westerners, followed by a big group outing to the local club full of westerners... Expand your mind maaan... Leave Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam for when you're older and want a more relaxing time! ;)

Currently getting everything sorted for my upcoming trip to Iraq. Starting to get a bit real now it's only 3 weeks away but should be an experience :).

Got a few others booked to Guernsey, Amsterdam, Moldova, Russia, Iran & Turkmenistan and starting to look into Ethiopia/Somalia/Djibouti for Jan/Feb.

I keep thinking about taking a break from it as getting the funds together is quite a sacrifice but I think I enjoy it too much!

your traveller spidey sense is borked. I do the kind of work I do partly because I enjoy travelling. In the past 12 months I've been to Kenya, south Africa, the UAE, Florida, Texas, Arizona, New York, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Japan, Italy. Heading to Singapore in a couple of weeks, on the Eurostar at the moment. None of the above were a package but usually a suitcase in tow, can I play?

I was just poking fun at the whole 'travelling' cliché which every generation thinks they discover and own.

Im hoping of going to Dam in December with a few mates - drinks, coffee shops (gotta try it, I dont smoke it but Ive tried it and didnt hate it) and of course window shopping.
Not to mention the absolute beautiful scenery of Holland anyway! plus i want to go in the car - Euro Road trip with the lads! :)

You need to carry a rucksack, visit a 3rd world country and ensure you bore all your mates with stories about the experience at any opportunity for at least 6 months after returning. If you do that then you can refer to your holiday as 'traveling' and feel all special...

Thing is most people do it these days and it doesn't tend to be too adventurous... rather most people go to the same hostels, do the same organised trips booked via the same companies... so it just becomes a package holiday again.... I think every year someone on my facebook feed has gone to the same salt lake in South America and posted more or less the same 'hilarious' group photos with someone looking small/far away in the background etc... Or someone else went on the same organised boat trip booked in 'nam.

Don't mean to sound grumpy but a holiday is a holiday... I'm happy doing either... carrying a backpack or checking into a posh hotel with a suitcase visiting a developed country or some third world place.... I don't necessarily consider one to be more special than the other.

I've spent 2.5 of the last 5 years in various parts of Southeast Asia and can comfortably say that 9 times out of 10 a suitcase would be far more convenient than a backpack, even for the people wearing the "backpacker's uniform" of fisherman's pants and a red bull t-shirt. I get that a trolley suitcase will not do the job trekking up a mountain but in almost every other situation a suitcase is SO much less hassle.

Skidder is bang on the money as far as the attitude of 17-24 year olds goes!

Vague job description?

Head south to Hertogenbosch, the town has magnificent history and also a really nice place! No more than a hours journey from Amsterdam.

You can play oh masterful one :P

As for those organised trips, not a fan. Never booked anything like that. Much better to turn up and just go with the flow.
