Off to London for the day next week and I'm just wondering the easiiet way to get about? From what I can gather simply using my contactless bank card on the tube and buses seems the easiest. But I have a couple of questions:

1. Fares and costs seem to be hard to find online. Assume you get charged per journey but it seems there's a max amount you can be charged in one day, is this correct?
2. I've no idea about the tube lines etc. If I have to get off one tube and get onto another, are you required to pay / tap your card for each journey? Or are the readers only on the station entrances / exits?

Buses seem easy as you just tap when you get on.

Sorry for the ignorance of such things. I'm just a thicko midlander.

As you say, tap with card, maxes out at the daily travel card rate. You only tap out when you leave a tube station.

For tube help on routes I use "Tubemap" on IOS works brilliantly, sure some Londoners will be in to give more detailed responses soon.

I hope you're not coming I to Waterloo mainline station. Owing to platform work there is a very reduced capacity and delays.

This.

You'll never pay more than the Daily Travelcard costs for the TfL Zones your travel takes you across.

Tube Deluxe and Bus Checker are both highly recommended for iOS.

Thanks chaps, good info. No ios here. And no, I'll be bussing in to Victoria and going from there.

Is the daily cap about £7 or £8 ish? I think it's just zone 1, but I'm unsure how the fares work or where the zones start / end. I'll surely ask a native, and hope they're not as frosty as I've heard :)

£6.60 is the cap for zone 1. Although I'm not a Londoner, I was there last week. IIRC it goes up to £7.70 if you use zones1/2.

A one day Travel Card in Zones 1 and 2, (think it covers Zone 2), is £12, there is a cap on Oyster and contactless cards in Zones 1 and 2 of £6 something, 40p? 60p?
We won't bite you, if you're a 19-25 y.o. woman, some enterprising soul may nibble your ear though!
Enjoy our city, walk as much as you can, you'll see more, and it's good exercise.

Cheers :) I will do some footslapping. From Victoria my first destination takes me up through past Buckingham Palace. Despite being an anti royalist I don't recall ever seeing it up close so I'll be having a gander.

Through Buckingham palace? Somebody call the police!

Nice thought, but he said that he's bussing in from the Midlands, so if he walks out into Buckingham Palace Road, turns left and crosses Grosvenor Gardens and Victoria Street, the Palace is along on the left.
Keep going up The Mall to Trafalgar Square, or veer to the right from the Palace, follow Birdcage Walk, straight into Parliament Square.

Just remember to say hello to people on the tube. Strike up a conversation with someone. We love that down here. You'll make lots of new friends.

;)

Citymapper app on Android is highly recommended. It will tell you exactly what buses, tubes, lines stations etc you need to get from A to B.

Feel free to stand on the left on escalators, when getting on tubes you should step inside the train then stop immediately, especially if you have a big bag, you were there first that train is for you and you alone.

to be honest if you are only staying around central/west end kind of locations and it's a nice day then you might get on better just walking from place to place unless you are planning on crossing town then you will need bus/tube/tram. I find walking around London is a much better way of getting to places without having to sit on a stinking packed tube carriage that is boiling hot.

:D You forgot to mention to make sure you stand in front of the ticket barrier and fumble around for your contactless/oyster card. Also to not take your suitcase/luggage through the larger barrier built for that, and instead try and get through the single person barrier with said luggage.

On a serious note, Citymapper is great app to use to find your way around.

+1 for Citymapper, it's great. Contactless card and you're on to a winner.

No cheaper way of travelling so ignore the cost, it's less than a tenner for a day rather than a tenner for a trip using any other method of transport.

Remember when walking in London, the safest way to cross a road is as far from the traffic lights as possible, moving extremely slowly, without looking, and with your face surgically attached to your phone. Don't worry about the cyclist swearing at you, he jumped the lights anyway.
