Hello all, i'm off travelling for 4 months next year round Asia, Oz, and USA and just wondering if anyone can shed any light on how big a back pack I may need.

I've read numerous websites that all give different information on what is needed, and obviously I don't want something too big as it'll just become heavy and a massive pita to carry around.

I've been told something around the 60l mark is about right, considering I won't be doing any proper jungle trekking/camping and staying in hostels mostly.

Was thinking of a 60l+15l bag so I can just take the smaller 15l part with me during the day. Can anyone offer any insight or advice?

Aren't you approaching this back to front? Surely what you should be considering is what you will want to carry with you - this will then tell you what size of backpack you need?

Clearly if you discover that you want to take more than you will conceivably be able to carry, you will have to reject some stuff . . . such as the bath and the "portable" TV & XBox ;)

Just get the biggest backpack you can get, because you're not a true backpacker if you're not annoying everyone in your near vicinity by smashing into them with an ungainly backpack.

I have a 65L and a normal backpack. managed to fit all my stuff in quite easily and have room to spare. around that capacity should be perfect everything you need unless you expect for some reason too need to take loaddds of junk with you.

I think any more is overkill when it comes to lugging it around.

Yeh, I was thinking 60'ish would be fine, i'm not going to be taking LOADS and I didn't want to fill my bag to the brim so it was overflowing and cumbersome to carry.

Will use the 15l day bag with it to carry aroudn my little bits and bobs with me.

I reckon it should be reet then! Just kinda confirmed what I was already thinking to be fair!

I used a 65l backpack, was plenty of room. I found I binned a lot of stuff after a few weeks because i didnt need it. Meant i had plenty of room

My girlfriend had a 65l backpack (She went for about 6 months?) full of stuff she never used. It was massive and hugely annoying but at least it gave me practical reason to justify hiring enormous cars.

The 60l one i've seen isn't that big to be honest (saw one in the shop, ordered online), was on special offer for £40 anyway so can't grumble, not going to be the best quality like some of the Berghaus ones but for 40 sheets I can't grumble :)

Should leave me with plenty of space should I need it!

Take a 60L+ and a smaller one 20L for day things. But as said it's geared around what you want to carry rather than the size so maybe write down everything you need first?

I did a 3 month round the world trip with a 45L that expanded to 55L and it was fine. If your planning on staying in hostels / cheap hotels then there is no need to take a sleeping bag, just a cotton liner will do and save space.

I took a 45L backpack when I went travelling. I could've used something slightly larger, so yeah, 60L sounds about right. I find it's always nice having a bit of extra room available just incase you get souvenirs or whatever.

Do 65L backpacks fit alright for the budget airline hang baggage limits?

I would be putting it in the hold for any for any flights and using the small 15l day bag that attachs to it as hand luggage so I doubt that would be a problem!

No. You need to work out what you can carry and then decide what you can afford to take that fits within that limit.

No. At least not on the flights I go on. A 35L is just about the maximum for hand luggage.

been backpacking for about a year now 60l is fine just buy a decent brand around the or 90 GBP is about correct price. Oh and dont forget SIDE LOADER not a top loader biggest tip i can give you

Enjoy travelling its the best. Keep an eye on that ipod and passport , passport = lot of money to replace. lost IPOD = tears onhow much music has been lost
