I have enough money on a popular MP3 website for a few albums (8 I suppose). Any suggestions? My taste in music recently;

Joe Satriani
Gorillaz
Gnarles Barklay
Amon Tobin
Feeder
Incubus
Saw ONE soundtrack (2 and 3 aren't so good)

I'm open to new genres - good music isn't restricted by what people call it ;) But I like insturmental goings on more than vocal goings on. Apart from that Mika song, I thought that was pretty good... anyway, please suggest some ear food for me!

if you like joe satriani, youll like buckethead

id recommend going for one of his softer albums though
electric tears(nice and gentle)
or
giant robot(bit heavier but happy guitar tunes galore)

Rob Dougan - Furious Angels (I'm sure you'll recognise his music)
Bonobo - Animal Magic (excellent instrumentals)
Bonobo - Days to Come(instrumentals and/with vocals)
Deltron - 3030 (He's featured with Gorillaz)
My Morning Jacket - Z (Just all round plain awesome, excellent vocals)
Thievery Corportation - The Mirror Conspiracy (Good good stuff)
AZ - Doe or Die (Hiphop - highly lyrical but quality)

Dunno much about rock genre but Team Sleep is Deftones' trippy side project.

Have you experienced any Steve Vai (he was taught by Satriani)? If not, definitely check out "Passion & Warfare" and "Fire Garden" to hear some serious guitaring :)

Aye check out some Steve Vai.

Satch is more more commercial and 'listenable', but so is a lot of Vai.

Check out Alien Love Secrets and his latest album Real Illusions: Reflections, as they're quite commercial sounding, the first one has some fantastic guitar work.

Passion and Warfare is just an embarrising chore to listen to. Alien love secrets is MUCH better.

However, if you are going for one of these sorts of albums, get Space Ship One by Paul Gilbert. Its bubblegum pop meets the beatles meets some serious guitar. Infact the piano based song at the end is my favourite! :o

Otherwise if you are looking for something epic, get a classic Pink Floyd album. And no Gilly I do not care what you have to say about that :p

Spaceship one is boring,.Passion and warefare is incredible.I think Paul Gilbert is amazing,.(my fave picker)But his solo stuff is pretty naff sounding. He couldnt sing if his guitar playing depended on it(which it does on his solo stuff.
Check out Racer x for and Mr Big for Gilbert stuff.
Alien love secrets is good, but Passion and warfare is what got me listening to intrumental guitar music.

have you heard the albums i recommended?
No, I was saying it half in jest. I have listened to a few of his things on youtube and some of that enter the chicken album... and they really didn't agree with me. Each to their own though. How do the albums you mention differ?

Fair enough, thats an opinion, how ever strongly I disagree!

Seriously, no way! Paul has a relatively good voice that really suits the music. His solo stuff is far better than the Racer X and Mr Big material, which are far too stuck in the 80's/ early 90's for my tastes. The songs have aged badly.

fair enough :p

well bucketheads more of an experimenter all his albums have completely different styles
the 2 i mentioned above

electric tears: equivalent of an acoustic album, just guitars, gentle molodies and what not. not the usual heavy weird experimental sounds he normally fires out.

giant robot: a bit of a fun album, with the odd intermission now and again. sort of a concept album but with more commercial sounding songs

and, to me anyway, electric tears sounds very like some satriani/vai stuff

Some pretty cool music's been suggested :D

Then again there's some I haven't liked much too ;)

Here's what I have liked so far:

Thievery Corporation - Versions
Thievery Corporation - The Mirror Consipiracy
My Morning Jacket - Z
Bonobo - Days To Come
Paul Gilbert - Raw Blues Power
Steve Vai - Alien Love Secrets

When it comes to guitar, I think I really do prefer the more commercial sound like you say. From previewing a bunch of Vai albumes, that one^ has to be my favorite (and probably the only one I thought 'hey this is really good', the others were more like 'hey this is really good guitar' but as songs I didn't appreciate them much). My Morning Jacket, kinda like Cooper Temple Clause / Placebo mixed together I thought :p Songs were a bit samey though..?

Buckethead was good too, definately preferred Electric Rain and Giant Robot. But elec. rain was just a little too empty the whole way through, not enough going on in the tracks... I like the occasional chilled out "simple" song, but I think a whole album of them puts me off a bit. Giant Robots was good but not what I'm into right now, so will stay in my bookmarks until I fancy something a bit more heavy and 'fun' :)

Am listening to "Team Sleep" previews now - it seems pretty good.

Any more suggestions welcome!! I'm on a right mission to find my new favorite artist now :p

Check out Ride the Lightning by Metallica, there is some great guitar on there, and the song "The Call of Cthulu" is a GREAT instrumental.

But in reply to the OP, if you're looking for instrumental guitar music then for me, it doesn't get much better than Tommy Emmanuel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCAVKPXDHXg - That song is called (The Man With The) Green Thumb and is from the album Endless Road.

But I'd recommend 'Only' by Tommy, one of my favourite albums of all time, it really is something special.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAS0xKTNyzM - I've Always Thought Of You, possibly my favourite on the album.

I know this isn't that much like you requested, but it's what I'd recomend in terms of instrumental guitar music. :)
