I am after a bit of advice please if you don't mind.

I have been clearing out the bottom of the garden with the chainsaw, taking down the old trees that have overgrown and prunning some of the larger ones. A couple of questions

1. What is the best cause of action to ensure a tree stump (1/2 foot out of ground) is killed ? The obvious answer is to dig it out, but I do not have the means to do this and just want to ensure it doesn't grow any more. I have heard cutting vertical grooves into it will kill the roots and of course many chemical methods.

2. I have taken a large (1 foot diameter) limb from a large tree. It has left a bare exposed chainsaw cut. Should I treat this to prevent further damage / infection to the tree ?

Many thanks.

There is some truth in copper nails, they may not kill a healthy tree but does seem to work at stopping a stump regrowing.

Hire a stump grinder for a couple of days?

If not, digging them out isn't too hard. Shovel, hatchet and patience! And the times I've done it I've not had a chainsaw to hand either.

1. Dig it out.
2. No need.

I followed youtube vids

drilled lots of deep holes into the freshly cut top of the tree stump and then poured the tree stump killer liquid (from any diy shop) into those holes and then with a paint brush just painted the entire top and then around the edges on the top.

This was few months ago its now looking a bit more blacker then usual hopefully it continues to rot and die, does sound like it needs to kill the deep roots then works its way to the stump !

May bang some copper nails as suggested above though :)
