tree surgeons - unrealistic quotes?

a tree sergeon once told me his liability insurance cost him £20k a year, if theres any thruth in that then that could explain the high price

It wouldn't surprise me, I imagine when something goes wrong it goes properly wrong rather than just an ooops.

... and if youtube is anything to go by, it happens often! :D

On topic, I second buying a saw and doing it yourself. If you don't have the means to dispose of it, you can always chuck £20 at a man with a van to take it to the local recycling centre.

I've underplayed the scale of these bushes but they are very big pyracantha coccinea so thorny mofos swallowed half the garden. You are right about tree surgeon being an overkill, I guess garden clearance might be better or a chainsaw and my dads old zippo :-).

Stupid tab getting another few quotes

I had a 50ft eucalyptus taken down, sawn up, removed and stuff put on to kill the roots, £80 and this was a proper company and not ******

Disposal of the waste is a far amount of the cost as well.

Recently had my local gardener do some work which involved cutting back 2 van loads of bushes and trees. On "mates" rates it was still £250 for 5 hours work and a large part of that was disposal.

However I did endup watching him do the work and chatting, resulting in me buying a chainsaw for £100 and an incernerator for £20 and continuing the work myself over the next few weeks. I reckon I have saved myself well over £600 so far and of course still have the equipment.

But felling a tree, this can be fun especially if in a built up area.

That's a very steep price. You're not elderly or obviously disabled are you?

My friend and I took down 2 80ft ashes for about that price! That included sorting larger sections for the dudes wood-burner, chipping and disposing of the rest.

I do my dads trees for him every few years. He has 3 small to medium sized trees and it takes me with his help a full day to crop them and then process all the branches ready for lots of trips to the skip. It costs him nothing because I'm his son. Maybe having kids is the answer. ;)

Only cost him ~£100k to raise you!

I want a big tree to chop down one day, think it would be quite good fun.

I didn't ask to be brought into this world, I had no say in the matter, so the cost of raising me is a cost he decided to pay without any consultation from me. ;)

Helping him out whenever I can is not about money it's about my love and respect for him.

You must be a lawyer or a politician with that kind of get-out clause :p

lol ouch

I bought myself a hedge trimmer recently... I know it isn't a chainsaw but...

still scared when using it (coming from an avid texas chainsaw massacre film fan)

Every time I get my hedge cutter out I have to run around the garden at least once Texas style. :p

Tree surgeons have to have hefty insurance cover, and public liability cover. So a good tree-surgeon is very rarely cheap.

As above though, I think you might not need a tree-surgeon for this job!
