Trends in gaming graphics memory usage

After a several years of not really needing to upgrade, it looks like that sort of time again. My old card is a GTX570; I haven't even decided on AMD/nVidia question yet, let alone which model.

My worry is about the fairly recent trends in increased graphics memory usage (a la Watchdogs). I'm assuming this is partly a consequence of the latest generation of console releases. What do people think is a reasonable amount to graphics memory to get to future proof me for the next 2 or 3 years? 3GB? 4GB?

I'm not planning to go the 4K route, but I'd like to play 1920x1200 as shinily as possible.

If it's 4GB then it looks like a 4GB 290, 4GB 770, or 6GB 780 is the only option. Unless I'm missing something.

TIA for your thoughts.

Better, higher res textures = more gpu RAM. I would have thought that with 4k screen res the texture would just scale down but still need as much gpu RAM, but not sure on that one...

6GB 780 wouldn't be the worst choice considering you want to keep the graphics card for a long time and there is not much of a price premium on the 3GB 780s. Better to have more than less cause with watchdogs 3GB is recommended even for 1080p with ultra settings.

As you've had your 570 so long would it hurt to wait a bit longer for Maxwell which should come later this year?

But I want new toys nowwwww.

You're right. I should wait until official Maxwell specs are released, and probably until I've seen some benchmarks. Even if I don't get an 880, prices on 780s should come down I guess.

Depends on if there are pile of games you are dying to play on highest setting on 1920 res and sure you will have the time for it.

Don't be like me...bought the 290(x) last Dec thinking I would do some heavy gaming over the holiday period but never got round to it, and 6 months later still barely done any PC gaming and only have time every now and then to game on phone and PS Vita lol.

Are you sure? I don't think that textures do increase in size as you up the resolution.

Nah what I mean is as resolutions get higher around 4k res then textures are going to have to be higher res to cope but if you still play in 1080 the texture are going to be the same and eat the same amount of RAM (thats my guessing anyway)
