Tri SLI uneven GPU usage.

Its probably a driver problem as tri-sli crossfire is never supported as well as dual cards. What psu were you running these cards on?

Your brother is gonna be a happy man.

Try not to generalise too much with a problem with SLI & Crossfire because the problem the Op is having i have never had with Tri & Quad Crossfire & i have had Tri & Quad since the 3870s.

I am running Tri GTX280's and I have never had a problem like that, could be that one of the cards wasn't happy in TRI SLI?

But... but.. They had shiny waterblocks, plenty of juice and braided cables :(
I tried to make them happy.

On a more serious note, I found out with the aid of MSI Afterburner that the cards were going to video mode clocks (about 405Mhz) randomly

This happens with 2 cards aswell ! I thought that maybe CoDBo wasn't demanding enough so I slapped on 32xCSAA, also turned off adaptive power management and its been fine so far

Just my luck that I figure it out just after I've given away one of the cards.

Adaptive power management can do that... however if your testing just Black Ops then this isn't an SLI problem but one of the many issues with black ops, the game has terrible rendering issues with a variety of platforms, I can't run more than 3 maps in a row without restarting the game or I get extremely varied framerates on the 4th map.

BO runs smooth as silk for me maxed out 2560x1600 Quadfire 5970's but it ran bad when the game first came out.

Its really random i.e. I know some people who it ran smooth as silk for when it came out but runs really ropey now for them with the latest patch. For me it was terrible out the box and became a little more playable with more recent patches but its still far from smooth as silk.

It was dire for me when it first came out, a lot better now, but gpu usage on sli 470's is still only 50% per card. 1920x1200 with everything on highest.
