Right, I have accepted an offer for a new job. This means I will be travelling 80% of the time, globally. I will be staying anything between a month or two at one location and then fly back to the UK for a week or so, and then back out again.

I will need a nice PC so I can kill time in the evenings as I wont have much of a social life outside work.

I am after a case which is quality, small and yet decent for overclocking. Hence something I can carry with me every one or two months.

Looks are not a top priority. Laptop is out of the question.
Oh I will need a monitor too. 17" flat will do. Light and quality.

Thank you for any help.

Build up one of these

Shuttle XPC SN27P2?

no idea how they perform, but you can normally get some sort of overclock out of a shuttle. assuming this is the sort of thing you are looking for as i can't really recommend any atx cases to travel with. other option is to build up a matx system (lianli v300 + matx motherboard of your choice)

Go SFF mate, buy a Sugo Evo and stick in a SLI rig, sorted. ;)

Or buy a Shuttle, although can be a little pricey these days there is no doubting the quality.

It is really the way to go if your moving it a lot, monitor under left arm, computer under right. :) (Or a carry bag!)

just thought - i want to be there when you go through security at the airports

Why not a laptop? They've really come a long way now you know :)

TBH you will find a PC (SFF, etc) will be a weight problem at the airport especially with a TFT, unless you plan on traveling very light or don't mind paying extra charges or shipping them around?

Perhaps you are right. But I would like to enjoy recent games at high res with disco inferno EYE candy.

A laptop with X1800/X1900 graphics and 2gb ram would cost ££££.

Yes security will be comical no doubt with a PC as hand luggage. What to do?

Hm that Shuttle XPC SN26P for socket 939 looks sweet for Opteron. But what are they like for overclocking?
They do come at a price too! For that money I could build a rig with E6300, X1800XT, 2gb ram, Seagate sata drive...

Will do some research...

NOT a chance of avoiding major hassle at international airports if you take a case.

They will soemtimes require you to turn on computer equipment. Easy for a laptop, a bit hard for a shuttle and tft :)

ALSO, you are also likely to get customs attention as again you're not doing the norm !!! You can expect frequent baggage serach adn reqests to prove you own the computer and aren't importing/exporting. You coudl releive that with a carnet but then you've hassle ALL the time.

I've travelled a lot over the years, trust me, go for a laptop :)

how about a custom built computer rig inside some sort of hand luggage :)

open it up and your tft is in the lid hehe

Seems the obvious choice. But the prices for a gaming laptop are insane compared to what a desktop solution costs :(

Could be worth getting a desktop, and then UPS/TNT/DHL it every two months.
I could build an awesome spec for £500-600. A Gaming laptop with decent gaming is atleast $2700 (£1500).

If I parcel the kit every two months at a cost of lets say £100 it will cost me £600 per year.
Plus you cant really upgrade laptops.

A laptop just makes so much sense here, especially in this day in age where airports are the centre of all paranoia

Dell do the XPS2010....it's a pc in a suitcase so to speak..comes with a 20" widescreen LCD, bluetooth keyboard, raid sata, 7800gtx, and folds up and you can carry it away.

Youl end up building a new pc ever 2-3months if u let those monkeys loose with it

I'd still say get the laptop. Something you have to consider is where would you put it? Are you staying in a hotel? If so then security could be an issue. Or are you staying in rented accomodation? If so is there a desk and chair available? What about power voltages?

A laptop is easy to carry, can be placed on the lap while sitting in bed if necessary, can be locked away easily, and usually have international power supplies that adapt to the voltage in use. And you can use it on a plane. Try doing that with a dekstop :)

will it be the same two locations?

build two identical machines and post one out to where you're staying, but only get one hard drive
