Trifire 7970 issues

Hi,

I am having some issues with a Trifire 7970 setup. I have the cards in slot 1,3 and 4, this should be x16 x8 x8.

When I check CCC it reports as:- 8 0 2
And GPU-Z:- x16 x1 x16

Any idea what's going on? Is this just a lack of software optimization to correctly detect the pci-e lane speeds or something to worry about?

Thanks
Chris.

Does the slot running at x2 run at x16 if you only have 2 cards installed?

Also interestingly I notice the manual talks about 2-way SLI or CrossfireX but only says 3-way SLI. I can't imagine it doesn't support 3-way Crossfire if it supports 3-way SLI, could it?

Is the 7970 a dual gpu? if it not then ignore but if it is then the site does says Quad gpu sli and crossfire which i would take it to mean if theres two gpu on each card than technically it would only support two cards BUT im pretty sure im wrong (id like to know to clarify these facts for me also)

It is a bit misleading with lane speeds. My Z68 board said X16/X16/X8 but when you look into it, when going SLI/CF/TriSLI/Trifire, the lane speeds drop to X8/X8/X2 or similar.

@ Scotsdragon. the 7970 is a single GPU card. the 7990 is a dual GPU card.

Apologies for the delayed reply.

From the manual:-

In 3-way SLI mode, use the PCIe 2.0 x16_1/PCie 2.0 x16_3/PCIe 2.0 x16_4 slots for PCI Express x16 graphics cards to get better performance

There is a table above that which shows lane speeds of x16 in slot 1, x8 in slot 3 and the same in slot 4.

As for screenshots. This is with CF enabled in CCC, I can't get a picture from GPU-Z of it running as need to go full screen but it reports as x16, x1 and x16.

Picture of the 2nd card showing x1

I've disconnected/reconnected the cards and get the same output, also I have removed the crossfire bridges and it also shows exactly the same.

Any ideas?

Having looked at your MOBO manual, you should be using slots 1 - 3 - 4 and getting X16 X8 X8 speeds for SLI.

Edit:

I have just looked on the ROG forum and the answer was to use slots 1 - 3 - 6

http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?7081-3-way-sli-cross-fire-on-sabertooth-990-FX

I'll try this shortly, thanks!

EDIT, I physically have 6 slots on the board as follows:-

PCIe x16
PCIe x1
PCIe x16 running at x4 (black one - according to the manual)
PCIe x16
PCI
PCIe x16

Seems odd it wants me to use the black x4 slot when everything else in the manual etc indicates use 1 4 and 6 (or PCIe x16 slot 1,3,4)

Gregster, read the post on the asus forum again and I cannot see how it can be 1,3 and 6..

This means the top 16x slot, 3rd 16x slot and bottom 16x
The 2nd 16x slot is the only one that's not suitable for graphics at 4x.

In other words, use PCIe 1,3 and 4 for x16 - x8 - x8, 2 is only for x4.

Am I reading this wrong?

That is how I read it. X16/X8/X8 speeds with those slots should be shown. Basically, Top slot Middle slot and bottom slot according to the ROG forum.

I read it like that as well Neil but after searching for confirmation, the ROG thread I linked tells him it can be done. My original post said the same till I edited it after reading on the ROG forum.
