Trip advisor reviews, how much attention should we pay to them?

I normally ignore most of the 1 star reviews.

I pay more attention to the 3 to 4 star reviews and see what they common denominator complaints from those people have. The 1 star reviews for a place that has like 2000 reviews and average of 4.5 are usually for stupid things. I've seen someone gave a hotel 1 star because their clothes got wet in the shower. They didn't notice it is a wet room design, and then also didn't notice how close their dry clothes are position to the shower. Even when there are photos before they book, and how can you blame the hotel for where you put your clothes?!

I've also seen someone given a hotel 1 star for a light bulb not working on a bedside table.

Look for one with lots of reviews and if overall averages are good then it will most likely be good. If you are in doubt, read more recent reviews to see if anything new has arisen recently, like constructions.

Also see if the bad reviews affect you or not. I've seen people knock a star or 2 down because the hotel pool was out of commission when they stayed. Personally, as someone who can't swim, it doesn't affect me at all so I can completely ignore that person.
