Trip to New York - Any tips on phone usage and useful apps?

Regarding guidebooks, I have downloaded a few electronically, I just don't really consume information that way. I can probably get away with how I navigate London - i.e. tripadvisor and google maps.

Up to you. I use a mixture of web and guide books when travelling but the quality of recommendations in the guide books is always better IME.

How about you put your phone down and absorb the city sights and sounds?? Just a thought

you can also check out man v food, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and such programs see where they visited In New York.

:D

I'm going back in November and planning on going up the new One Trade Center. Has anyone else been up? worth it?

it is worth it, if you time it right you can go up in daylight wait a little bit then see the sun set and then NYC at night

Also another vote for Dallas BBQ

... USA is notorious for silly expensive mobile phone. ...

Whilst mobile service in the USA can be (and often is) much more expensive than the UK, it isn't always the case. T-Mobile USA and various MVNOs have reduced the price of mobile service over the years (see below). it's also worth remembering that the UK is much more densely populated, with ~20% of the USA's residents, whilst being 1/75th of the size. This means that there is a much greater need for more telecoms infrastructure in the USA, which is expensive.

T Mobile USA, 30$ visitor sim is the best you'll get in USA

It isn't strictly a "visitor" SIM. Anyone can buy one and use it in any compatible GSM phone. I have one and I get 5 GB LTE data, unlimited texts, and 100 minutes for $30 /month. Three's Three Essential Plan is a rolling 1 month contract and offers 4 GB LTE data with unlimited talk and texts for the equivalent of $26.67 /month, so it isn't that much cheaper than T-Mobile USA.

+1 went there and the food was amazing, hot dogs are more like hot donkeys

Got one of these as well

I admit I may just be an idiot, but I tried that when I was there and I found it to be a bit of a nightmare. It isn't like the tube in London where there's loads of nice clear maps once you get underground, and I ended up going in the wrong direction / taking the wrong line so many times it didn't work out cheap at all.

I gave up and downloaded all the taxi apps (Uber / Gett / Lyft and a few others I can't remember) which all give you discount codes / vouchers etc. Ended up costing me very little and was a lot easier and more fun than getting the subway as you get to see a lot more of the city.

Spent a week in NY at start of June, and as a Three customer with a tariff that included Feel at Home, was able to use my 8gb of data for booking things, using Google maps, uploading photos etc. When I got home I received a text from Three, I'd saved £1,464 by being with them.
