Triple monitors but only 1x580gtx , help please! :)

keep your 580 for a while untill you can get a 7970, or even keep saving for nvidias new ones to be realeased later on in the year. However if you are desperate, see how much the 7950's are along with the benchmarks and pick one of them up. (and give me your 580 too thats important...)

Well, my new monitors arrive tomorrow so i have to do something fast!

I'll have to check out these 7950 reviews tomorrow as i'd be stupid not to.

I'm gutted because my 580gtx flies on everything! but i need dual monitors to even plug 3 monitors in, so keeping it is simply not an option, but i can't give it away im afraid :p

I would honestly get a single 7970 and then add to it if you need to.

Remember the logic. Three screens = one headache. Multiple GPUs = a second headache. Add the two? what do you get?

A serious friggin headache :D

I've also heard many horror stories about Crossfire and Eyefinity together.

I really think your totally right :D

Only slight thought is, if i only have one ATI card, how do i plug all 3 monitors in? i know its not possible on nvidia but i believe on ATI there may be an adapter ? and then i guess it depends how much this adapter is and whether or not that money could go in part way towards another card anyway, even if theoretically it is as you most likely rightly say, "another headache" ! :D

Ah now that I can help you with.

Simply avoid XFX, as they're the only tight buggers who don't give you the mini DP to HDMI adapter (active, they're over twenty quid to buy).

Get the Sapphire for peace of mind IMO.

Ah nice! thanks!

Goddamnit, i need to see these 7950 benchmarks tomorrow! :D

Could i ask what your current set up is too btw? This pc really is going to be mainly for everyone in my house to have a bit of fun on eyefinity gaming. I've no intention of doing any work on it but just purely games. Sorry i forget to say that before :)

It's not the work side tbh. It's just how utterly horrible the layout is. I mean hey, if you're rich enough to build a rig powerful enough to run just as a three screen gaming machine then I doff my cap to you. However, if you want to use it for utterly anything else (emails, chatting with mates, browsing the web) then yeah, 7 series it must be. Otherwise it just renders your desktop useless imo.. Try and remember though, I'm the guy that sees things as they really are, and in that I mean.

Crossfire and SLI are too much aggro.
I don't often overclock.
I don't run FRAPs when I play a game and remember the FPS I got so I can go and tell my friends (they'd quite probably laugh at a 39 year old man doing such things)
I run Vsync because I am capable of seeing screen tear. And it's prevalent, and I sodding hate it.

So I don't like having screen tear in order to gather those oh so important frame counts with which to assault my poor friends with.

ETC. I'm what you could consider to be honest, yet very very boring.

I'm running an I7 950 w/6gb ram. And whilst my 3dmark score could be considered on the limp side of things (around 7800 points in performance) I'm happy with it.

I've been made aware that the same card at 1125 or whatever the max OC is right now running on an I7 2600k can net around 10k points, but I'm not really bothered as it's all synthetics and due to my love of Vsync wouldn't make a difference any way :)

I'm just about to dabble with passive 3d and Tridef, so expect me back in a week telling every one just how rubbish it is and to avoid it :D

Hah, love it :D

By the way i just had a thought...

"mini DP to HDMI adapter"

HDMI , uh oh?! won't that kill my 120hz ? all 3 monitors will be 120hz and i swear theres a problem with 1080p+120hz via hdmi ?

I'd hate to go without 120hz!!!

snip, I did read it though...

Hi Andy, the thing with the taskbar and the extended desktops is already available though, or are you saying whilst in eyefinity 3 joined screens mode? I achieve this already though just by using 2 presets which I toggle with keyboard shortcuts.

If I want to game I switch it to my eyefinity preset, then I have a massive bockering taskbar that spans all three monitors, 5760x1200, when I've finished gaming I switch to my extended desktop, centre monitor is my main with start button and clock, outside two are both extended, I do all this on a single 6950, I do have to satisfy myself with medium settings in most games but I find it fine. My primary use for my PC is not gaming though...

regards,
J.

Eyefinity is completely different mate from what I can tell. Surround is just a total botch. I think Nvidia only really worked out that botch so they could match AMD.

But yeah, it's total fail IMO. They need to design it into their architecture like AMD have.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't think either are perfect. AMD should be lined up and bloody shot for their insistence on using a sodding Displayport to get it working.

The best solution for multi monitor gaming is AMD, maybe Nvidia will deliver something next gen but the single card solutions they offer, a specialist 580 1.5gb is a tad to small on vram and I'm not aware of any 3gb models knocking about. AMD are also king of the duel GPU hill with much better scaling, this could also change with Nvideas next gen but unlikely.

This in mind, for you, I'd recommend you sell the 580 and buy a 7970, especially if your current system supports crossfire.

You'll need dual link DVI or DisplayPort for 120Hz.

What connections do your monitors have?

i am running BF3 on 3 Dells @ 5760 x 1200 on medium settings,

all this on 2 x GTX470's not even OC'd ;)

just get another 580 it will be fine

edit: just relalised that your running 3 x 120 hzs lol
