There seem to have been a few threads on here, in particular aimed a muslims, that would seem to just be plain bigoted nonsense.

Obviously genuinely criticising religion is acceptable (and quite frankly there is a lot to criticism within Islam, Catholicism, Anglicanism etc..) but I can't help thinking that some posters basically just mean 'Asians' when they post 'Muslims'. Petty threads informing us that Muslims don't celebrate Christmas etc... just appear to be the work of racist trolls.
 
If the word Muslim gets mentioned in GD, we just go around in circles with the same types of bigots littering the thread. Even the Eid threads :(. Add this to 'spec me a blanket', 'my relationship is on the rocks so I will talk to strangers instead of my partner', daily mail threads, link and run threads and so on. GD is still great but it has been infected with more than the usual amount of crap....first two pages have 5 threads deleted or closed.

There is such a huge amount of people on here, your bound to have a few bigoted idiots!

But then again, i'd rather have that and laugh at their stupidity than everyone agreeing and this being a boring place :)

On the Relationship threads note, I don't mind them so much, sometimes you just need to vent or just speak to someone about it, and its hard if you have a circle of friends who all know each other :)

Also they can be epicly funny sometimes :p
 
People seem to need to be afraid of something....Muslims are simply the latest thing to hate.

Most of the arguments put forth are based in ignorance and a lack of objectivity....I mean religion has enough real stuff to be critical about without having to make stuff up...
 
Not so much afraid of IMO, but to blame.
It's not human nature doing the killing it's religion. So on and so forth.

It's plain to see and when religion can't be used be ause. There's no t enough religiuse people. Then other things are found to replace it. Like WMD.

I think you're completely wrong. People know the difference between an asian person and a muslim. If you read these threads thoroughly, you'll find that there is very little mention of race and in fact they attack religious beliefs directly. I, for one, as someone who has a great distaste for religion, would never bring someone's race into it as race obviously does not indicate religion. All religions are on the same level of BS as far as I'm concerned.
 
Doesn't the Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths encompass every form of ethnicity anyway?

There are white, Black, Asian and middle eastern Jews, Christians and Muslims etc. etc.

'Asian' is synonymous with 'Muslim'? Are all Muslims Asian? Or all Asians Muslim?

I fear you may be apportioning too much credit to some people, I don't question that some will be well informed about what they criticise but equally there are a number who simply don't appear to have expended the effort to understand the position they're espousing.

Criticising itself is fine as there are plenty of valid reasons to disagree with religion or segments of it but what is requested is for people to voice their opinions in a respectful manner.

I wouldn't want to see a blanket ban on religious threads as has been suggested, such matters can and should be debated but there's no call for rudeness when doing so - if you can't make your point without resorting to insults it's probably worth questioning yourself if your position is actually as sound as you first thought.

I'm assuming you're American, the ignorance is on your part in this case (note I'm not using 'ignorance' as an insult either). Let me explain - in the UK the vast majority of Muslims are Asian and just to clarify, in the UK, when we say 'Asian' we are generally referring to people of Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin. There is a trend in the UK for far right groups these days to attack 'Islam' and 'Muslims' when in reality all they are doing is using 'Muslim' as a proxy for 'Asian' so that they can carry on '**** bashing' but pretend its acceptable as, on the face of it, they're simply attacking a religious belief.

I suspect that some of the threads posted on OCUK recently are just that too - an excuse to rant about Pakistani/Bangladeshi people rather than a genuine criticism of a religion. You asked "'Asian' is synonymous with 'Muslim'? "
Wrong question really, its the other way around, in this instance - 'Muslim' is synonymous with 'Asian'. The latter essentially being a subset of the former as far as the UK is concerned.

The issue I have with the threads is that online it can be very difficult to tell who is joking, who is being sarcastic and who is being serious. And that could lead to a few non needed discussions.

Fair enough, I see what you mean. I would hope people, even if they weren't that well informed, had taken a long while and given themselves a good opportunity to consider their views.
