Trouble choosing a 27" 1080p GSYNC monitor, any advice please?

Edit: Due to the help I've had so far, I'm looking for a 27" 1440p 144hz monitor that preferably is at least GSYNC compatible. If you have a suggestion please let me know.

Hey all, recently upgraded from an MSI R9 390 that started to artifact to an Asus 1660 Super. I have 2 22" 1080p 60hz monitors at the moment. I'm just looking for a higher refresh rate.

I've read that due to pixel density on 1080p if I'm sitting 2 feet away from the monitor, it's suggested that I dont go over 27" monitor size. Is that the general consensus?

So my question is, I'm looking for the best "bang for the buck" 144hz 27" GSYNC compatible monitor. As I said I have a 1660 Super that afaik is GSYNC enabled but some freesync monitors work with it? I'm not 100% clear on the Gsync/Freesync aside from understanding one is AMD and one is Nvidia.

PC specs below in case it matters.

R5 2600X
B450 Tomahawk Max
Riotoro Enigma G2 850W Modular 80+ Gold PSU
HyperX FURY 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 RAM
Geforce GTX 1660 Super Dual Evo OC GPU

Personally I would have said 24" is the biggest you want for 1080p. Anything bigger tends to look bad, and 27" is probably better in 1440p.

Thank you! I'm worried to try 1440p with this card as I've just spent the last five years playing games on mid settings to scrape 60fps. I dont wanna go back to that cause I've bought a monitor that really taxes the card if that makes sense? What about 2 1080p 24" monitors with high refresh rates then? I can always get one soon then another later if it's much more expensive.

Hi,

Probably start with this recommended/approved list https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/awards.htm

Not the easiest to navigate by resolution or screen size but a good start.

Many freesync monitors will work with Geforce 10 series and later. G-sync compatible just means that a freesync screen meets the G-sync credentials with regard to vrr operating range etc. Other freesync monitors may have a narrower VRR operating range.

I'd probably go for an IPS or VA panel over that TN but they cost more.

I think you'd be better off going for a 1440p monitor as you can turn off some settings to get higher frame rates and some post processing settings are there to make 1080p look better. And you can always render in 1080 if you really wanted or a particular game really chugs. What games do you play? I think 1440p with medium quality settings look better than 1080p with the settings at max.

I'm running a 980Ti with an Acer Predator 27" 1440p monitor at 144Hz refresh. I generally set everything to max/ultra.

Here's a quick comparison between my card and yours:

I think you'll be fine....!

Thank you all. I think that it might be worth getting a 1440p monitor then I guess. So is there a tidy 27" 1440p 144hz Gsync compatible monitor around for a reasonable price?

Most of your good options will probably be IPS panels, I expect.
Brand new, some will probably be expensive, although prices are coming down.
Second-hand, prices will be lower and you won't have as much of a risk playing the IPS Backbleed lottery.

Finding something in stock is gonna be the issue and what's left are on the more expensive end. OCUK have been busier than black friday according to the staff coz everyone went mad for monitors for people working from home and gamers fancying an upgrade being on lockdown like yourself.

There are 3 panel types

TN - cheapest usually and have fairly washed out colours
VA - have the blackest blacks (apart from OLED TV's) but can suffer from ghosting on fast moving images across the blacks and can be somewhat down to how susceptible you are to noticing it.
IPS - Have good colours but due to the panel technology they suffer from 'glow' and some poorly made panels bleed from the edges - so there is somewhat some panel lottery here.

We cant link you what to buy from other sites (against forum rules) but seeing as there isn't that much stock monitor wise at OCUK, you could look in the deals section or B-grade items - though you only get 3 months warranty with B-grade ones. If you do select one, ring up OCUK and ask for Niktheschnik (monitor man) and see what deal he'll do for you on a B-grade item - the personal offers can be very good.

There's these;

A cheaper tn

A 2560x1440 is gonna be more expensive than a 1920 x 1080 so maybe way more than you had in mind for your budget and may send you back to considering 1080p. Though a 1440p monitor will last you a few future graphics card upgrades.

What do you use your monitor for? If you are going 27inch and it is your primary monitor I would not go less than 1440p.

1080p is limiting. Ok for gaming but every other aspect of computing life is not good. Things will look extremely pixelated outside games under normal usage. Also you will notice every thing is MASSIVE compared with your 22inch due to the screens having the same res but 27 inch is obviously a lot bigger so everything is scaled up accordingly.

1660 super won’t be able to handle 1440p game playing under highest settings so you will be gaming at 1080p.

Thus I would recommend you look at a good 24inch 1080p monitor. I have a couple on my list but they are all not in stock and can be preordered but wait time is long. But the standout one is the AOC 24G2U - around £190 on preorder

mid you really need 27inch for that extra on screen real estate then go with 1440p. You will need more cash for a decent screen tho. TN or VA panels will be significantly cheaper than IPS. VA is not known to be quick thus not suitable for games. TN is meant to be fast but doesn’t offer as rich colour but there are back panel tricks manufacturer do can bring it a bit more inline with IPS but then you are looking at a price hike. A decent 27inch 1440p with 155hz+ sync IPS is going to be starting around £400
