Hi all,

On and off for quite a long time the internet keeps dropping out on my computer and the yellow (!) appears and then i go through the options like troubleshooter etc to get it back but after doing this a few times eventually it stops completely for reasons unknown to me. I came across one solution that helps for a while before the same thing happens again where you unplug the psu and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Not sure what this does but gets the internet back up and running. After a while though (couple of hours) it all starts again and i have to repeat the same process. A similar thing happened last night when trying to watch BT sport on a youview box through powerline adaptors. It was fine and all of a sudden it just wouldnt have any of it. Tried resetting and all sorts.

How can this be when using hard wired connections? My wifi works perfectly.

Totally remove your powerline adaptors and test again.

Could even be picking up a neighbour's powerline network so you've got 2x DHCP servers.

My pc is not connected via powerline just the BT youview box. My pc is connected directly from my router. Thats why im so confused about the intermittent connection. My wifi for phone etc. works perfectly. I dont have a wifi card in my pc. I was wondering if it may have been a similar issue with the youview box just due to the fact that after an hour or so it would no longer pick up the connection just like what happens on my pc. The thing about picking up the powerline from next door is a possibility i suppose, so that could explain the youview thing but still cant understand what is happening with my pc

Remove the powerline from your network for the time being, see if your PC is ok.

Make sure you're on the latest version of Windows 10 too.

Im using a BT homehub 6 i think. Its the latest version anyway as it was replaced a few months ago after the old one fried after a thunderstorm. I've had it in use without powerline adaptors in use and the same issue occurs. Had the same problem when i had my previous homehub 6 router as well.

It's possible that your NIC is damaged if the old router was taken out by lightning, I've seen this happen a few times. Temperamental issues, only resolved by new motherboard.

Is it just the Internet that drops out or the whole LAN connection? If it's just internet have you tried changing your DNS servers away from BTs? I recommend the OpenDNS servers.

Its prob the BT hub some seem to work some break from what I have read in many forum posts here and there. I must admit the hub BT sent me a few years ago is still in its box I have never used it!

Well i have now made sure windows 10 is upto date as it downloaded the latest stuff yesterday. It did show that it had failed to do it a few times. Possibly because internet drops out frequently. So how do i change the dns servers? Im not great at operating computers, i know how to do basic things i need and how to build one but other than that i need advice.

It'll be a setting in your BT hub somewhere, having never used one I can't say exactly.

Did we confirm that it is just your internet that drops? the actual LAN connection is ok?

This will tell you if it's local network issue or internet issue.

Next time it happens, open up a CMD window (Start, run, cmd)

ping 8.8.8.8

-Try it now so you know what it looks like, it will tell you how long it takes to reach 8.8.8.8 (a Google server)

ping 192.168.1.254

-The IP of your router.

When you have issues, if you can ping the router but not Google, it means there's an issue with your internet.

Right now if my understanding is correct i would say its lan connection from the router to the computer as my phone would still be working perfectly on wifi so therefore my router is still receiving an internet connection. When my old router went wrong it was still trying to broadcast wifi but had no internet signal being received therefore no wifi worked either.

When i get a chance i will use the cmd thing and see what it says and then again when its next down.
