Trouble with ethernet connection on pc

Worth checking your Windows 10 version as above, some older versions had network issues that have now been resolved.

Ping 8.8.8.8
Time 9ms three times and 10ms last time ttl=57 everytime. Thats with it working currently. If it drops out i will try again.

Sorry for not coming back sooner ive not had a great week. My internet dropped out and the ping to the router didnt show anything. All i keep getting is that the default gateway is unavailable when it goes and i eventually get it back. For a while this week it would not even find my router.

Eventually i got desperate and went through some options as my usual technique of getting back online by unplugging the psu and holding the power button for 30 seconds didnt work. I went through control panel, network and sharing and then troubleshoot. Gave a few more options, so i went to the network adapter section where eventually it said it would reset it and will schedule a shut down in five minutes. Well it seemed to work sort of. It was now recognising that i had a router but couldnt keep a connection. So this morning i went through the same steps but went to the incoming connections and went through that bit and so far so good. Turned my computer on 3 times over 4 hours and still got a connection. How long for I dont know. I wont hold my breath.

To be honest I'm thinking hard about getting a wifi card (pcie) or a dongle as i never have trouble with my wifi.

I should probably just get a fairly cheap one as I dont have much cash and if that doesn't work well for me at least i havent lost a lot.

Would pcie or a dongle be better?

I see some pcie even have usb connections to increase the range.

Seems like it might be a silly question, but have you tried powering down and waiting for 30s before restarting up your router? I had a router that kept on putting a device on a Yellow (!) and a power down reset resolved it. Might help for you if you haven't tried it. As I think I've only read that you've tried everything on the PC end? If that remains so, give the router a quick go over.

In my desperation yesterday i did resort to that Meddling monk. I dont usually bother as it makes no difference. It didnt this time either.

My connection went again shortly after those earlier posts. It will come back with a troubleshooter reset but for 5 mins if that before starting the process again and again.

Do you have another hard wired device, can that ping the router when this one is having problems?

To rule out either the router or the existing PC.

Just out of interest, why is pcie card better than dongles?

Also any recomendations?

I do get a 52mb connection from BT and actually get that , when it works. Although i dont really game on the net it might be useful and is it worth me stumping up extra cash for 802.11 AC?

I mean pci ethernet (cable), not wireless.

Cable is 100% stable unless there's a problem with the cable/card/router.

I can find another device to connect. I have an old net book somewhere if it still works. Hardest thing will be trying to find the charger. Lol.

Yeah i realised you said ethernet shortly after the post. Seen a very cheap one i could get to try out.

Still some suggestions for a wifi card in case that doesnt work would also be appreciated.

Well I've been out this morning and bought myself a tp link tg-3468 ethernet network adaptor. So far so good. I havent installed any drivers yet. The cd it comes with doesnt have drivers for windows 10. Am I better off leaving it as its working or should I find a windows 10 driver for it?

So it looks like after all my ethernet port is at fault on my MSI GD65. I've been doing some reading and seems that a lot of people seem to have trouble with the killer internet ports. Maybe its a weak point on MSI boards I dont know. I dont think I have had this issue previously. My last motherboard (ASUS) did me 5 years but started to get shaky after about 4 and randomly kept crashing when playing games even games that didnt really require much graphical power. So far this board has been solid apart from the ethernet port. I just hope its not the beginning of the end. Had it 3 and a half years and still like my build.
