Troubleshooting: Have i borked my cpu/mobo

Looking at the none Max version it clearly states when it dropped bios support for older Althon CPUs (2019).

Looking at the Max version it doesn’t list dropping support for any CPUs. Their website is not overly helpful, at least on the none max version it states back in 2019 about dropping support. For the Max version the BIOS update and CPU support list 5xxx but nothing about dropping support for older chips.

I would expect it to be listed unless MSI are known for not adding correct notes to their BIOS updates.

Also found this post on reddit of a guy updating his B450I to the same agesa version bios and he's running a 3600.

Just updated my B450I Gaming Plus Max Wifi that has a Ryzen 5 3600 bought in March.

Didn't fix USB problems. Half my USB ports still bugged. The rear 3.0 stack under the network jack and front USB 3.0 header ports work properly. Rear 2.0 stack and other 3.0 stack bugged. :("

Well a new day and i decided to ask MSI live chat for help. turns out I probably was correct. The webchat is below:

I have to ask our tech support to make sure, but I believe the BIOS that enables compatibility with Ryzen 5000 on B450/X470 motherboards might remove compatibility for all older CPUs
That was the case for B350/X370 when Ryzen 3000 came out and I think the same restrictions might apply here

I did look but there was no warning on the Bios page about lost compatibility

You're right that here is no warning on the website, unfortunately There used to be, but it was probably removed when one of the more recent BIOSes came out

So i will have to change to a 5000 series cpu for this to work? i am now in the predicament that i have a bricked pc because of this

Probably, or you could ask your retailer to RMA it, I think our repair center can deal with this. although depending on the retailer, they might not be willing to accept this

So. if the retailer cannot assist. i am for want of a better phrase. out of luck because the website was not properly updated with warnings

I'm afraid so

This is exceptionally poor service. do you not agree?

I have not the words. So word of warning guys bios updates that don't give warning may indeed break your computer

Don't give up just yet.

Send them an Email explaining this, tell them if they had provided sufficient warning you would not have updated the BIOS, ask them very polity, to replace the board, don't scream at them "its your fault" what you're doing is explaining what happened in the nicest possible way and asking them to help you out of the predicament.

And don't give up if they say no to start with.

Also use their twitter page, their facebook page, go at them from multiple angles.

I'm rather bemused with the whole thing to be honest. The agent on the webchat asked me to contact the MSI support desk and send through the weblog. He's already briefed them on the situation to see if they can help further. So will see where that goes and will mention on social media when/if I get a response first.

The 5600x will be arriving later this evening now will be able to prove beyond a shadow of doubt if the issue was lost compatibility. Maybe they will be so distraught they will send me a 3080 as a good will gesture :D

:D we can only hope.... 3080, yummy, that would be nice.

Well i suppose you have a valid excuse to upgrade your CPU, let us know how that goes :)

I just want this to be a word of warning when people are updating the BIOS as there seems to be very little information out there on the internets where you can lose compatibility with what you think is a recent CPU when updating. Also that MSI and maybe other OEMs may not be providing the exact information when you are going through this process.

BE CAREFUL

I am confused for sure. Couple of points.

1. "That was the case for B350/X370 when Ryzen 3000 came out and I think the same restrictions might apply here"
That is not true. The website clearly states for the None Max version that its was only the old Althon CPU's that had support removed.
"This BIOS does not support below Bristol Ridge CPU due to BIOS rom size limitation:
Athlon x4 970/950/940, A12-9800/9800E, A10-9700/9700E, A8-9600, A6-9550/9500/9500E"

That did not remove support for first get Ryzen CPU's.

2. The reddit thread I linked had others updating to the same bios version as you with 3600. Ok the boards differ but its within the same generation boards and the same agesa version. So pretty much same bios version.

But its good to get some sort of response from support.

You proberly covered this but you checked the power cable to the CPU is plugged in ok as it can cause a simillar problem to what you have.

One has to be carefull with bios updates as a Gigabyte board I had years ago had 3 seperate revisions of the same model, the website was clunky to switch between the seperate revisions and the bios update description/instructions lacked infomation.

I made my system very unstable flashing a beta bios that changed the bios the have a graphical interface (UEFI?) and I had find another program to revert the bios back as once you updated it would not allow you to revert back.
