Troubleshooting sudden shutdowns

Right, here is the awkward problem I'm having.

The computer will just suddenly shutdown as if someone pulled the plug, only the fans will start spinning very fast. I'm not sure which fans but it's probably the CPU or GPU fan, most likely the first.

The fan will keep on going until I turn it off from the power button. Then when I start the computer it will start as normal. It does that every few days, and it has done it 3 times so far.

Also, while it's in that odd state, pressing the restart button does nothing, the screen is obviously dark and no mouse/keyb movement changes anything.

any ideas on the potential causes? any help appreciated.

Have you looked in event viewer to see what was recorded for the time it shut down.
You might also want to monitor temps.
Is the Cpu OCed?

Nope, the cpu is not oced and the computer is not doing anything taxing for the temps to go up (I usually get a popup notifier if temps exceed high levels from the mobo app).

I'll have a look at the event viewer to see if there is anything that can help.

Only thing I can see in the event viewer is this:

Critical Error
Even 41 Kernel-Power
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

that's what comes up whenever the system reboots.

Details show 0's next to all the EventData, and when I expand the +System area it doesn't have anything of interest as far as I can see.

^^ that just means the pc shutdown unexpectedly

id look at your ram settings dram voltage if it randomly shuts off like that its usually memory or cpu northbridge voltage not enough, not sure what its labelled as on amd

thanks, considering I have not tweaked at all anything, never OCed etc, does that mean it could be a faulty ram stick or just the cpu playing up?

could it be the psu would that have different signs?

I don't know you have to start with the easiest which would be ram settings/voltages then move onto other things
