Just how are trousers cut to fit certain size waists?

I need a few pairs of new trousers/jeans and my waist is 33" Yet I have some North Face, Berghaus trousers that are listed on the label as 32" They fit really great though because the actual measurement is 34" I have several pairs of designer(y) jeans that are like this too.

Yet some don't fit for example my Levis because they say they are a 32" and that's what they measure with a tape.

How should trousers correctly be done? I'm thinking if you have a 32" waist you buy a 32" trouser but they are cut slightly larger (34) so you can actually fit into them and use a belt?

i generally ignore most sizes and get what fits best.

mens (like womens) clothes sizes change so much between brands and designers, its not simply a case of picking up a pair of 32"'s

I went on a shopping spree yesterday and every part of my body seems to have shot up a size in about 2 weeks.

Trainers - I've been a size 9 for as long as I can remember but yesterday I had to get a 10 because Adidas seem to want to make shoes for pygmies.

Jumpers - I've suddenly gone from a M/L to an XL since yesterday morning.

Jeans - I've got a pair of 32 waist jeans that fit perfectly but yesterday I couldn't fit into a pair of 34 waist jeans no matter how hard I try.

i find trouser size difficult.

i'm 36-34

but 38-34 is more comfortable, looks baggy though

i really need tailor made trousers.

I find it varies with different types of jeans, button fly, 32" is ok, zip fly 32-34 depending on the jeans and 36" for trousers

Weird.

just the same for me waist 32
but find trousers for me are 34

but jeans can vary from a size 30 to 34

iirc it was in the 1950's that the sizes/measurements/fit for mens and womens clothes were first implemented as a standard for clothing, over the years the size and shape of the population has changed and there is/was another clothing size survey but not all manufacturers follow the new standard hense a 32" waist trousers from Mark and Sparks fit and the Levis don't.
