Hi, I am trying to decide between The Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140 Power and Noctua NH-U14S.
My priorities are:

1 - Noise when using the PC lightly - browsing, movies. Ideally I want to turn all system fans off (including the heatsink fans) and get below 60 degrees on the CPU, but I am not sure if this is doable with these slim heatsinks.

2 - Cooling power at max RPM (same fans) for benching. Which one is better?

3 - Compatability - vertical or horizontal orientation? Mobo is Z97X-UD5 and I have a sound card in the first PCIE x1 slot and G.Skill TridentX memory in 2nd memory slot:

Both are good coolers with very similar cooling ability and fans. I have compared the TY-147 with NF-A15 and find both give almost identical airflow and noise levels at same rpm, but NF-A15 is 200rpm faster so NH-U14S at full speed will be slightly cooler, but also slightly louder and you cannot buy another NF-A15 1500rpm fan .. only the NF-A15 1200rpm is available. No idea why Noctua has two fans with exactly the same model number. :(

G.Skill TridentX is 54mm with and 39mm without heatspreader.

TRUE Spirit 140 Power is 155 x 53.4 x 170mm
NH-U14S cooler w/o fans is 150 x 52 x 165mm
True Spirit 140 Power is just 5 x 1.4 x 5mm bigger

Both are too wide to clear your audio card in top PCIe x4 socket.

Quick scaling from your image shows approx. 72.5mm center CPU to side of first PCIe socket and 72mm for RAM socket.

Archon IB-E will fit. It is 155 x 53.6 x 165.2mm with base offset 8.5mm giving it 69mm center CPU to PCIe socket.

Hi, thank you for your reply.
I have measured 61.6mm from CPU center to 2nd memory slot, where the 1st module is installed.
I am thinking to remove the heatsink from the 1st memory module and install the cooler in horizontal orientation, so it is blowing the air to the top of the case.
But I am not sure if the memory requires the heatsink to cool itself effectively? Would it be OK without it?

RAM heat sinks do very little. It's just more advertising hype / smoke & mirrors / bells & whistles / make it look appealing. I have never had a problem with RAM running too hot. Some of the best RAM has no heatsinks at all. Many people have taken heatspreaders off of their RAM with no issues .. and G.Skill would not have made the top removable if it necessary for cooling.

Is this a new HS or an old one? I'm pretty sure I have a TRUE Spirit 140 on my 3570K I think I nearly threw the thing out the window putting the fan on. It has those clips that thermalright use to torture detainees in Guantanamo Bay, at least that was how it felt getting the clips on the fan.

Whoa! That's not true!
Thermalright doesn't use them at Gitmo.

They just sell them to USA,
who then send them to Gitmo. :D

The best way to us fan clips is to practice installing the fan before installing the cooler. Also, Thermalright clips that go into holes in fins need to be installed on cooler before cooler is installed .. or you become a Gitmo detainee.

That's where I've been going wrong :) But it is a great cooler. At 4.2 1.175V it gets around 50-60C with a low speed TY140 on it. Although it did obstruct the top PCI-E slot, but that's not a massive deal.

The fan clips are fiddlie for sure.

FYI:
Thermalright is about to release a TRUE Spirit 140 BW Rev. A with the base is offset 8.5mm to give better PCIe clearance. Center of CPU to side of cooler is 69mm and 86mm the other way.

They already did similar to the Silver Arrow IB-E and Archon IB-E .. and of course the TRUE Spirit 120i and HR-22.
