Hello,

I was thinking of swapping my current i3-2120 into my HTPC/Server to replace my current AMD Athlon II x2 240e with HD4200 onboard graphics.

The only thing holding me back is the amount of information on the web relating to Sandy Bridge's inability to handle 23.976 FPS.

When is this likely to affect me - i.e. is it only for Blu-Ray films or HD generally?

Also, is it likely to affect me - I have heard that the slightl mismach causes a judder now and then. Is anyone out there using onboard SB graphics to watch video and actually noticed this jolt?

Thanks

It doesn't depend on the video resolution but on how the video was recorded. Most movies are stored at 23.976 fps but the Intel integrated gpu will only allow playback at 24.000 fps so every 40 seconds you will get a frame repeating itself to scync. the video. Most people can't and don't notice it though an are happy. Why are you looking to changed from your current setup may I ask? (Just curious as I used an Athlon II X2 240 in my old HTPC too). To solve your problems you could just pop in a basic video card such as a Radeon HD5450 or a NVIDIA GT430 if you want support for 3D Blu Ray. Both suppor bit-stream of HD Audio (Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio).

Hi,

The reason I was thinking of upgrading was that I run Mediaportal off the machine and sometimes things go a bit juddery and I am trying to work out why and if there is a bit of a bottleneck with my current system.

I have lots of RAM, a Hard Drive that should easily deal with recording and playing multiple streams, so I thought it had to be the Processor/Graphics combination.

Do you think that perhaps the problem lies elsewhere?

One other quick question - what exactly is bit streaming?

I run my HTPC through a 5.1 Yamaha amp - is bit streaming something I need to bear in mind?

Thanks

I can't imagine that the media portal would stuggle with your existing setup. I run XBMC and have tried media portal on my AMD Zacate setup and it seems OK. In XBMC I occasionally get some sluggishness in the menus, ususally when I'm running some programmes in the background or it's updating the library. Not tried it whilst recording from two tuners so maybe it could be that?

Bit-streaming HD audio is only for Blu Rays. Basic video cards such as the 5450 can pass through high definition audio via HDMI to you AV receiver. Unless you have a fairly highend setup it won't matter much and if your amplifier can actually decode these formats.
