Trying LOTRO 10 trial, any tips?

Every single time someone asks about LOTRO, you get multiple posts telling them to start on Laurelin.

And invariably 5 or 6 posts later you'll see they've rolled a toon on Snowbourne. People seem to see 'RP Server' and run a mile, I don't understand it.

Surely if you don't like RP then you'd go on a normal server so that you don't annoy all of the people who do like to RP.

Personally I'm not fond of RP and thus stayed away from it.

The funny thing about Laurelin is that it seems to lack the nearly perpetual arguments about RP'ing that seem to go on on the general chat channel of RP servers in other games.

I've never had someone try to enforce RP standards on me either, although I'm also careful never to be blatantly OOC - ie discussing the footie in general chat or the like.

The main difference seems to be that you get an awful lot more 'colour' for want of a better word - people talking in character in Bree, the Prancing Pony usually full of people in character. I walked into the hall where bilbo is in Rivendell the other night to find it full of elves singing. Nutters, the lot of 'em, but it really adds to the game :)

This.

For me, RP servers really add to the atmosphere of an MMO. The Prancing Pony is always heaving, the Green Dragon Inn has regular event nights, I usually see many more player created events on RP servers than on normal servers. All adds to the life of the MMO and make it more than just a bunch of pixels about levelling. Not bothered whether a person actively roleplays or not, as long as they dont act like the proverbial donkey-kin in public then I dont mind whether they "roleplay" or not. Many many people on RP servers dont roleplay, but they come to those servers because generally the community is nicer, more active in terms of player events and more mature.

I am on gilrain and love this mmo.
For me, it's the best mmo out there and to be honest I was not that fussed about the books and movies.
It's just a great, fantastic place to be and the community is great.
It's also great to be pulled along by a story and not just the race to get to max level.
I enjoy WOW also but lotro is far more relaxing.

You probably just need to give it a little more time... I cant imagine a more engaging MMORPG that LoTRO in terms of story, charcaters, and zone design. Coming over from WoW may be one of the reasons it is not gripping you. I'd say give it a at least until around L25 by which point you should have done some of the epic books, advaned you skills somewhat, and explored a couple of zones.

Which class did you go for out of interest?

So, because of this thread I decided to give the game a try. Created trial account, downloaded, and, tried to play. And try is what I did indeed, because the lag is so bad I can barely do anything. Went to visit the tech forums, did a bunch of tweaks, and still nothing.

Anyone else been hit with this, I know for a fact is not my computer hardware/internet connection. I have set up the firewall rules to allow lotr. It is just a total pain, have wasted 5 hours this weekend just troubleshooting the thing.

When you say lag, what's actually happening - rubberbanding, freezing, or is it just graphical slowdown?

Actual lag shouldn't be an issue for any of the EU servers. The game could just be bringing your PC to it's knees though if you've got an older graphics card.

Lag in LOTRO is usually due to connection troubles, rarely to do with the gfx from my experiences. Although, i haven't had any troubles whatsoever with LOTRO.

No I haven't got any graphical lag. Examples: I click on NPCs and it takes 5-10 seconds to get any reaction. Same for moving, I press any key and it takes several seconds for the action to happen. Once in game, loading takes 3 minutes or so.

My connection is good, I have no problems with any online game but LOTR.

Hola, try this utility from Turbine http://community.codemasters.com/fo...nce-forum-737/409383-what-datdefrag-tool.html

It basically orders all the datafiles for the game and helps with stuttering very well when I tried it. It will take about 30 minutes to run (just unpack to your LOTRO folder and run it from the command line). However from you description of the problems your having it sounds like you have other issues to. But try that first and see if it helps.

Eric.

There does seem to be a 'normal lag issue between the accessing of the database and your client side. It is usually only very small 'lag' but as the game has increased so has this issue.

I hope you can resolve this :)
