Trying to force a budget upgrade to work

I have a spare dell optiplex 320 knocking about, which supports lga775 chips with an 800fsb, armed with this knowledge I got the best one meeting the criteria I could the E3400.
Now it appears to not work, I'm running the latest bios and I know everything else is working fine.
Can anyone think of something I could do to get it going or am I flogging a dead horse and should cut my losses and sell it on?

It seems like the optiplex 320 can work with Core 2 duo based chips so long as they are 65nm (conroe), ideally 800MHz and running the latest BIOS.

Since the E3400 is a newer 45nm (wolfdale) based chip then it is unlikely to work, however if you picked up something from the E2xx0 or E4x00 series then you should be fine (an e4500 recently sold on the MM for £20).

Does it post to BIOS or is it totally dead?

If you have an older chip that does work with the board try updating the bios - it may have an old bios that does not recognize the newer CPU

ah, bugger, I didn't realise that was the difference, cheers. Will see what I can sort.

fan spins up but won't post, it's on the latest bios available
