Hi,

I've recently decided that I want to get myself fit and healthy. As well as running and the bike, I want to put on muscle.

I've an idea of what I want to achieve but no idea about how to go about doing it.

I've always been slim in build (I'm around 5'10" and weigh 65kg) so I don't want to get big. I'd just like to be more muscular but also toned.

As for the CV....I've invested in some good running shoes and I'll be trying to run at least twice a week, steadily building up how far I run over time. I'm also going to get my mountain bike out again.

What I'm really after is places to start reading about the workouts I should be looking. Also workouts that other people on here have done. Ones that you found work, ones you found didn't.

I understand that nutrition is also going to play a large role. Where can I find out about the right food and supliments etc?

Would Mens Health be a good place to start for general fitness advices?

Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times. I'm a complete noob at this and just reading people's posts doesn't really help when you don't know what they're talking about!

Thanks.

well done on wanting to make a change :)

first up, you are right, this has been covered lots of times, due to that a sticky was made with loads of info in it :)

have a read a few times, see how it sounds. Then if you have any questions feel free to ask them :)

Stickys? Pah, who reads those :o But thanks for the heads up. I'll check out the sticky and the url posted.

Indeed read the sticky. You are at about the same point as me when I started but a couple of inches shorter. If you want to be "muscular" then you need to prioritise it over everything else, you have got a massive amount of work to do. I'm now 87.25kg and still have a long way to go. Don't worry about riding or running, we don't need it. Eat a lot as often as you can of clean food, if you are training hard enough you will definitely need it. Just read everything you can from bb.com (does have some good info), as well as t-nation and ask here, but just be wary there is an awful lot of crap everywhere, you just have to try and sift through it.

I'd like to do some running and other exercise to get my general fitness up, though. It's also something that I enjoy.

Just looking at the sticky and it seems that free weights are going to be best as it will be difficult to get results with machines etc. How are body weight compound exercises for gaining muscle?

if you have never exercised before they are great.
However, after a while they will not help you (when done exclusively).
Invest in some kit or get to the gym, to build mass

machines are tools to use when training. The point the sticky is making is that machines alone are not enough.
