Trying to install things but nothing works

OK im trying to install gnome dock on ubuntu
so heres what i do

i cd to the correct directory

I type ./configure

it reads out a list of crap

i type make or make install

and i get the stupid message

**** No targets specified and no make file found stop.

please somebody help me!
 
Any chance of a copy 'n' paste of exactly what you're typing and the responses?

Also, are you doing "sudo make install" or just "make install"?

You're missing glib and the other things it complains about. Do a sudo apt-get install on those :)

glib will probably require the others and so install them automatically at the same time...
 
i type in sudo apt-get install glib-2.0

and it says that glib-2.0 cant be found, it syas this for all of them, i dont understand :s
 
You may need to enable some repositories - these are different servers that hold all the libraries and apps you download via apt-get. By default not all of them are turned on.

followed that and still getting the same problem, god knows why anyone would even bother with linux over mac or windows. :o

Persevere that man, are you a man or a mouse (no offense!).. a little research and a little less reliance on Windows Wizards and most people are fine :)

Not having used Ubuntu for a while I can't remember the exact settings, but try to find the "Synaptic" in your System>Admin menu (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto) and search for Glib from there (yes I know this probably won't show anything if apt-get isn't showing anything but...) .. what version of Ubuntu are you using, please? If you get really stuck, check http://ubuntuforums.org for some excellent advice :) A quick browse on the forums there shows a good few glib-related questions :o

What is the program your trying to install? have you checked you have all the libs etc installed that the app is going to need? what version of ubuntu are you using?

as to the above comment god only knows why someone would want to buy a bloated os (windows) and pay over the odds for a mac. not having a go but giving up because you can't get something to install/compile is a bit harsh.

You need those packages. when you have installed them maybe you will have more luck they might come as a part of something else.

Not wanting to step on any ubuntu toes but if you're still having no luck and still want to give linux a go then you could try opensuse.
Yast is it's installation manager and will search and auto install packages from added repositories.
And it's now meant to be easier still with the newly released 10.3. It's available to download now or you can hang on to the end of the month for a retail version.
 
Are you following a thread on how to install gnome-dock?

I would suggest searching for the necessary dependencies like glib in synaptic, i found ubuntu has slightly different names for some packages, if u cant find it in ubuntu just google glib ubuntu and see if you find anyone who has solved a dependency that is the same

Anyway hope you manage to sort it out

More to the point, its the devel versions of the packages that are needed, as you're trying to compile against them.
Try this:

sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev gob2 libgtk2.0-dev libwnck-dev gconf2

Try the compile after that & you should be good IIRC.
