Trying to move from a 7990...

I ordered the OC version linked above in the third post, which is now unavailable...

Yes I can see some other places list an OC version but Sapphire don't on their website. If that's what's on your invoice then contact OCUK and you should be able to get it sorted with an RMA or maybe a partial refund for the difference if you want to keep it.

Thanks for the reply. I don't mind keeping it if I can have the difference refunded. RMA will be a hassle and I'd probably end up having to pay for shipping or something :-/

The Sapphire is on special offer at the moment so best to get the difference if they give you it. How much was the OC version? A small 40MHz OC is easily done on the standard version anyway.

I'm in Ireland so after VAT the OC version was around 451. The normal version they have on offer at the moment is showing for me at 440.

Strange people keep mentioning bad AMD drivers and crossfire support and yet overall the numbers show crossfire scales a small bit better than SLI and nvidia has had a whole slew of terrible drivers recently but AMD have done nothing but get better since omega.... :/

I must be one of the lucky ones?

Regardless, from a 7990 if you want an upgrade you either need a fury/X or 980Ti. 980 is about the same speed and is pretty poor value for money compared to the 390/970/fury/980Ti.

At 1080p though I don't see much point going for more than a 390/970 really, I mean it can max witcher 3 at 60 fps and VSR/DSR is basically a gimmicky AA with a much higher fps impact.

EDIT: Scratch that, just saw that 390 maxes witcher 3 at 1080p 50 fps. Go for a fury if you want the better performance.

As a quick update, I have kept the non-oc R9 Fury Tri-X I received and unlocked its shaders to 3840 (the one above was unstable), so just a tad under the Fury X.
I have also overclocked the GPU clock to 1040.

In terms of temperatures and noise it is staggering in comparison to my old 7990: After an hour of playing Metal Gear Solid at 4k (or 3840x2160) the hottest it got was 77, and that was with a fan max of 33%!
It is very quite and I love the fact that the fans turn off completely when idle.

Performance wise I have only tried Metal Gear Solid so far, and I never played it on my 7990 so I can't make a fair direct performance comparison between the two.
I have also read the game is really well optimised.
That being said I can say I am able to play at 4k (or 3840x2160) resolution with all the settings on 'high' and it hardly ever dips below 60 fps and looks absolutely stunning.
If the graphics are set to 'Extra High' expect between 45-60 fps.

Perhaps I would be getting similar performance with the 7990 but with the much cooler temperatures, much quiter fan, less power consumption etc etc I have to say I am very happy with the purchase so far!
