Trying to overclock but....

I'm not having much luck.

Hi everyone, long time lurker first time poster. I'm running an I5-3570K on a Gigabyte G1 Sniper M3 and decided only recently to try overclocking it. I changed the cpu multiplier to a modest 40 and then ran prime 95 to monitor temsp and voltages etc etc before moving on. However both CPU-Z and Core Temp showed no increase in clock speed. I've tried repeating this several times, rebooting, changing multipliers, searching the internet and am now just scratching my head.

Am I missing something obvious or could it be my m/b is bust?

Can you give some screenshots from the bios settings you are using (usually UEFI bioses have screen capture thing, plug a usb stick to save them to)? Generally it is never a good idea to leave the voltages on auto as they tend to do stuff you do not want. Give some screenshots and we'll try and give you some possible settings to try out.

could it just be that you have only adjusted the turbo clock or whatever it is that boosts the clock speed when a single core is being used?

Thanks for your replies all.

I think these should show the main screens of concern, note that these show my base settings, the only thing I changed was the cpu clock multiplier. A lot of the voltages are at auto but my understanding is that if anything this will lead to more volts / heat being supplied than necessary. Once I established an overclock at 4 or 4.2 I was intending on adding negative offset and working from there as opposed to a flat rate voltage supply.

I would also look at your memory settings as this can have an affect on overclocking.

I have manually set my bios to reflect the specs for the corsair ram at 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v. This isn't above the memory spec so I didn't think this would effect an overclock through the multiplier. Am happy to be corrected though.

try latest bios or reflashing the same bios, sometimes it sticks in applying the settings till you reflash it

I have the most recent bios for the m/b but will consider reflashing if there is no other option. I had a quick look at the guide (will look more a little later) and couldn't see anything much different.

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure it was the main cpu multiplier.

leave the turbo ratio's on auto

just set

cpu base clock to 100
cpu multiplier to 42x
loadline calibration to medium
cpu voltage to normal
dvid to -0.010v
vcore voltage response to fast
pwm phase control to extreme performance

all else can be left enabled/auto

then see what load cpu clocks/voltage is when stressing in windows

^What he said. :)

Just before you change anything, load optimal defaults, save and restart. Also use the XMP profile of your memory as it usually has some secondary timing settings as well. Some memories change VCSSA voltage as well but yours is with low enough speed to need this. Do not fiddle with it if you plan to leave it on stock,it can lead to very funny and unpleasantly hard to find instabilities of the system.

Ok, I changed all the settings and ran Prime again, Core Temp didn't show the cpu going above 3.6GHz :(

Also done but didn't seem to make a difference. :(

it should apply the settings, but ive had it not apply on my board till I reflashed bios

if the bios is outdated flash to latest version, could be that also

use usb mem stick and qflash

I reflashed the bios to the latest beta version and it still didn't allow me to overclock, however flashing it to the last non-beta version and success!! I can now overclock the cpu.

I set the multiplier to 42 and the other settings as suggested earlier and ran a Prime blend test for just over 20 mins. No errors produced and CPU-Z reported cpu voltage at 1.296 so just under the 1.3 I want to use as a max. One of the cores hit 81 degrees whilst the others were in the 70's so I will tinker and see if I can increase the offset some more and drop temps a little, I don't want to go over 80 degrees if I can help it, otherwise I will need to invest in a better cpu cooler.

Thanks for everyone's help :)
