I've tried FRAPS, DXTORY, GAMERECORDER all the same thing firstly my mic voice recording is way to quiet even though it's maxed out ( logitech HD 720 cam ) and the video in the recorded screen appears in the top left hand corner not far off the size of a thumbnail.

I've set the display settings to 720p and full screen, they are still doing it

The game is maldita a retro platformer

I started doing commentaries. The thing I found is that you will need to turn down the in-game volume quite a lot. My first few videos you could barely hear what I was saying over game volume.

I also found it helped if you go into Windows Sound options and play about with the microphone settings in there. It's not ideal, but under the Levels tab my Microphone Boost is set to maximum and now in the videos you can hear me clearly, but the game volume will have to stay low unless you plan on shouting down the microphone the entire time or if you plan on recording your voice after on something like Audacity and then mix it in. Although I don't agree fully with recording the voice after as I like the whole idea of improvising it rather than coming up with a script after.

Not sure about the video being the size of a thumbnail, but have you just tried rendering it for the sake of it and then playing it back/uploading it to see what it's like? It might just be the way the program is set up. Not quite sure about this, but someone else may be able to help further.

Can you not just record the footage and commentary separately ? then throw them both into movie maker and adjust the audio levels appropriately.

Or maybe try camstasia.

I don't capture my mic with the game capture software - that goes through Audacity. Means I can cut out ums etc. without having to cut out a bit of game sound when doing live commentary.
