Trying to rip her off?

Thats what you get for going to a main dealer.

Having my car MOT'd and tyres fitted at the main dealer next month.....

Because the MOT was the same price as the backstreet garage.

The standard wheels have solid centres they need to be balanced properly which requires them changing the adaptor on the machine, might as well get the main dealer to do it £7+VAT for fitting of each tyre (that im providing, many places are funny about doing this).

Poos all over the big chains ATS et al, could save a few quick at a backstreet place, but the best price I got last time was £25 cash for 4 fitted, and I wasnt happy afterwards as one of the valves needed replacing as it developed a funny bulge after a few weeks.

If you dont know much/act like a numpty then they will try it on, but if you know the tricks then it doesnt matter, no worse than any other garage imo.

They are saying they will do the brakes discs under warranty as a sweatner - I doubt they need doing, i've had the same many times when the wife takes her can in, then when checking them after they are fine.

Also have heard quite a few main dealers that will just wet the bleed nipple and take some brake fluid out/put new in rather than doing it properly.

Its stories like this that make me glad I have taken my cars to the same garage for the last 9 years, gets a good trust relationship built up.

...but wtf on those prices. I did me front brakes for £80 of the bay fitted myself with the aid of a manual, which lets face it is pretty much all the YTS kids will be doing a most of the main dealers.

My Celica T sport had it's 50K service in december a (14 months ago) which involved new disc's and pads all round, cost a small fortune, then mid Jan (13 month ago) it was due it's MOT, i said just fix anything urgent but should be ok, 3 hours later they told me car was ready and they had to replace all the pads and sics as they were pited.

I wanted to know why they had just carried out the work and they said i told them to fix anything. Turned up and showed them the reciepts from themselves for the 4x pads and discs from no more than 6 weeks previous, car had only done about 1200 miles in that time.

I demanded they put the old ones back on as i'm not paying again, they couldn't as they had aloready been disposed off. but as a gesture they would not charge me for the parts just labour. Still wanted to charge me around £200 for labour. Took about an hour of arguing for them to agree not to charge me for anything except the £45 for MOT. Loads better than the £500+ they were after. Never been back since.

Yup. How else would a single mechanic do 10 cars in a day to keep his boss off his back? :) The busier the day the more short cuts are taken. Luckily I don't think any main dealers would skimp on the engine oil department...

Just a quick update on the status so far.

Basically my GF told them what a guy on the Toyota forums said, "if there admiting the fault with the disks then there should be replacing the pads also"

They said they would have to contact toyota GB and see if she had to pay for the pads or not.

Currently as it stands they are saying she probably wont, and theres a very good chance she will get the disks and pads under warrenty.

They wouldnt budge on the 25 quid for clutch and 25 quid for brake fluid so they arnt doing that.

They price matched black circles for they tyres tho.

So as it currently stands shes going to be paying for the service at 190 and the tyres at 51 each.

Much more acceptable than the original £650 figure. Can you imagine just how much money these dealers make given that most people don't ever question them?

Did you not look at the discs they had supposedly replaced? You would easily be able to tell brand new vs 6 week old discs.

I can't see how they can invoice you for the discs & pads if it wasn't agreed beforehand that the work would be done. Replacing disks & pads certainly doesn't qualify as work you'd normally get done during a service.

Kinda reminds me of when I took my car to Honda once to get my aftermarket exhaust removed, the woman at the service desk tried to charge me £80 until I told her that was more than it cost them to put it on in the first place at which point they were miraculously able to do it for about £30.

I just had a chuckle at this, my car went in for it's service yesterday and I got a similar list of things that needed doing although my bill topped £1000!

I have the same bull with my local stealer.

They always do a cheap service then try to rip you off with new this and that, obviously I ignore them.

my gf's mother has a peugot 107 and they tried to charge her for new disks too, a quick complaint meant they covered it free of charge

I can only see main dealers getting worse in creating work for themselves what with new car sales dropping through the floor. Have to have your wits about you as it is ;)
