OK, I've posted a lot of similar messages on these forums but today is the day I finally fix everything. My PC just isn't running very smoothly, I mean it lags when I try to open windows live messenger. I'm probably going to re-format again as I really don't have anything on here, and it will mean I can start from scratch. So anyway, I know for a fact everything is seated correctly, so no errors there. I'm going to ask for everyones help in deciding how I should go about speeding up my machine. I don't need help overclocking, just small things I can do.

Starting with the operating system: Vista Home Premium or Vista Ultimate???

i wouldnt waste money on vista with windows 7 launch so close. Unless theres some upgrade option to windows 7 from vista thats good value.

how long does it lag for? does it lag before or after youve logged into messnger? . Have you reformatted recently or has the build been on the disk a while?

I only bought the PC back in June, so it's fairly new. And I have both versions of Vista so it's not a matter of money, just what's better for system performance. I want speed.

There's no speed difference between HP and Ultimate. The difference lies in some additional functionality supplied with Ultimate.

Reformat, install Vista, patch, latest drivers and one AV.
How fast is it now ?
Otherwise get your hands on a W7 and do the above. Any difference ?

I don't mean to be silly, but what's 'one AV'? It's supposed to be pretty fast, and to be honest, I don't particularly want to go with windows 7...I just want to have a virtually lag-free PC for when I do simple stuff...

AV = Anti Virus - I usually go for AVG.

As you say, your system should be pretty fast. Do you have a lot of software installed? - especially little utilities/toolbars and things. You have to be carefull what you install becuase even if you uninstall it, it can leave things that could potentially slow down your pc a little. - Especially things that load on startup.

Hmmm you maybe right, I've used up more of my HDD than I thought. Still got 200GB left though, but thats out of a 320GB HDD. But still, less than I thought. OK, may I ask how I go about re-formatting my HDD, because last time I did it I just threw in the Vista disc but I still have the same problems as last time.

Well appart from backing up all your improtant data (documents, music, pictures etc.), you should be fine just using the vista disk. When you get to the hard drive selection screen just press Format, else it may make a new partition and not remove your current copy of vista (not sure if this was only with xp but it's just to make sure).

If you bought Intel in the first place you'd be alright!!!

Not everyone can afford to waste money on components like the ones in your sig. *drools slightly*

edit: I have always found programs like Tuneup Utilities can be helpful when trying to make your system run a bit smoother.

Having more than one AV running is notorious for slowing a system down. A reformat and clean install should clean out any other things set to run at startup.

Like this.

why reformat?, your problem could be system restore as i said earlier, you say theres not much installed on your machine yet your hdd is used up to a third of its capacity, using cleaners and stuff is not a good idea, if something goes wrong with them your fubarred for sure

Been using Ccleaner for over a year and never had a problem. Can always back up your registery before do the clean. Also when I normaly run it once a month it normaly cleans over 6GB of crap(cookies, temp files from going on the internet).

you can do that from internet explorer, messing with the registry is not something i would advise someone to do unless you know the person is a compotent user of his pc( im not saying your not) and im sure if he was he wouldnt be asking for help on speeding up his machine
