Trying Vista on Virtual PC 7 beta Questions

i am messing around with this now to see how vista is, and to test the hardware virtualization etc tech on my conroe.

one q tho, after installing vista and getting it working the way i want, is there any reason why i cant take an image with acronis and put that image on a different PC?

p.s, i like the new startup look to vista RC2. so much nicer than XPs.

also, the VT tech seems make a hell of a diff. this install of vista took less time (way less) than the test install of XP i did on my old 4400+
 
typing this now via virtual pc / vista and IE7 and it feels almost like vpc isnt there at all.

really like the GUI on vista as well.

so far, seems nice.

one thing i cant find how to do is change it so i can see all files and folders - no hidden folders

I was actually thinking of doing the same, how much disk space/memory did you allocate to the Vista install?

Are you able to run full screen virtualisation or is it not possible?

Im going the VMWare route as they have a free home edition, just need to remember to install it at some point
 
i gave vista 512 ram and 20 gig of drive space to start with.

as for full screen - tbh i havent tried it. i'm running it @ 1600x1200 at the mo but for full screen it would have to do 2560x1600

BruceLee, microsofts virtual pc is also free now tho.
 
update

now have the newest acronis true image working on there (v10) and it works fine.

am now putting some of my normal progs and see how they fare on vista.

o&o defrag works fine :)
nod32 doesnt :( - emailed them about an update tho.
vdubmod/megui and x264 and my other encoding progs work fine

if it keeps on like this, i may move over to it full time from XP. looks nicer too
 
So you managed to create a backup image of Vista then? Have you tried reinstalling it yet?

Sounds promising, think it sounds a bit easier than having to dual boot Vista.
 
yep, wasnt willing to throw it on a live system yet.

cant put the image onto a diff pc at the mo since the mobo has been sent back. once the replacement arrives i'll rebuild the pc and throw vista on there.

only downside to using v/PC is that you cant have some visuals as your gpu appears as a basic one.
 
Got round to installing Virtual PC and Vista too, takes a while to install but otherwise quite good. Seems to take a fair chunk of CPU time but ive set it to 1 core so it seems OK.

Its a bit like a good VNC session.

I take it if I created an image of the install I shouldnt have any problems with installing it straight to disk?
 
that worked for me in the past with XP so i would think it should be the same now.

its what i plan to try anyway
