TSA and camera kit

As has already been pointed out above, camera gear is not something that security officials ask you to remove from your carry on bag to put in a tray, that seems to be reserved for just laptops and tablets.

In my experience, I've only once had my camera removed from my bag and that was after it had been scanned within the bag, and they then took me to one side to go through it. This was at Heathrow Terminal 5, the security person inspected it and then took some swabs, presumably to check for explosives.
Manchester are more keen, flying out several times in the past few months and each time i left the camera body inside my bag it ends up getting flagged and then the explosives trace swab. Removed from bag with laptop / tablet and no issues.

Thanks for all the feedback again :)

Never had anything but positive experiences with TSA personnel when I've gone through security at various US airports.

Usually have an M43 body, 2 lenses, chargers etc. and never been asked to remove them from my carry-on bag.

As other have said, I was there in July and had no issues. I had a DSLR with two lenses a Lumix point and shoot and an iPad in my camera bag.

I was asked to turn the camera on leaving Heathrow to prove it worked, but had no other issues.

I wouldn't worry about carrying it through, I would never put it in the hold though. Had a lumix stolen from my hold luggage flying into Turkey, I was silly and should have carried it on but thought it would be safer in the hold of the plane.

Flying to Portugal this year with a 6D which will be in my carry on bag.

I have a job in Italy later this year, so will be flying with 90% of my gear in my Thinktank. It has a TSA lock and design as a carry on. It will be interesting through customs !

some bizare post about peoples stuff going missing through screening.

Thats very impossible it terms of large obvious items such as laptops and camera's

You would instantly notice it going missing.

Something tiny and small it may but again very unlikely
